The case of the anti-Mormons
The Deseret News ^ | 6/30/2008 | Scott D. Pierce

Posted on 06/30/2008 6:25:14 PM PDT by Utah Girl

Viewers of tonight's season premiere of "History Detectives" will learn that a book about the horrors of "Female Life Among the Mormons" is a work of fiction.

And the woman who owns the 1856 volume will be "disappointed" by that news.

"History Detectives" (8 p.m., Ch. 7) is a fascinating series in which historical objects are examined to determine if they're authentic. (Tonight's other two segments feature a World War II diary and a coin shot by Annie Oakley.)

In the case of the 1856 book about the horrors of Mormon polygamy, Marcie Waterman Murray of Stanfordville, N.Y., bought it at an auction and wants to know who wrote it. (There's no author listed.)

"I was very moved by this book. It really stayed with me a long time. I've become fascinated with it," Murray says.

What stayed with her is a barbaric account, written in the first person, of a young woman who married a Mormon elder in New York and traveled to Utah with Brigham Young. She suffered the "abominations" of polygamy and the "degradation it imposes on females."

That includes one account of a misbehaving wife who was stripped nude, tied to a tree and whipped until "blood ran to the ground."

Enter Tukufu Zuberi from "History Detectives."

"You don't know if this is a real book. You don't know if it's really from the 19th century. You don't know what it is," Zuberi said in a phone interview with the Deseret News. "But it is a document which definitely offers a skewed view toward marriage among Mormons.

"It puts (women) on the level of being slaves. You can take it as something that's either laughable, looking at it today, or something that really provided fuel for those who were anti-Mormon back in the 19th century."

Without detailing the entire episode, Zuberi quickly discovers that this is not a genuine history. Among other things, it purports to tell the story of Joseph Smith's death and gets it flat-out wrong.

And the show's conclusions are clear. "It seems that our book is little more than pulp fiction, and shot through with historical errors," Zuberi says in the show.

The segment briefly outlines 19th-century LDS history, including the effort to demonize Mormons.

"Someone could write it today in order to kind of speak badly of the Mormons," Zuberi said. "Someone could've written it then to speak badly of the Mormons. And that's our task — to find out."

He does his best to track down the author, including using "some high-tech stuff to determine who wrote the book and determine the authenticity or lack thereof."

"This one I was surprised by. The Mormon story has a lot of twists and turns."

In 21st-century Utah, "Female Life Among the Mormons" seems silly, even campy. But, obviously, the book's owner thought — perhaps hoped — it was genuine.

Upon learning that it's fiction, she gasps and says, "I'm actually a little disappointed. But I'm glad to know the truth."

But it certainly seemed as if she would've been more glad if Mormon women really had been tied to trees and whipped.

I don’t read or believe in the Book of Mormon. So I don’t notice the absolutes.

I didn't quote the Book of Mormon...I cited the LDS Pearl of Great Price, which I'm sure you haven't read, either. So since you concede you're speaking from big-time ignorance about Mormon claims, perhaps you shouldn't try to export it.

They have a right to their faith. You have a right to yours.

The context of what you raised was what you called "denigration." I simply pointed out that the "denigration" was 100% initiated by Joseph Smith with his first vision (the portion I cited to you). He labelled every other Christian & every other Christian church/sect as abominable, corrupt, and something that should be 100% quarantined (don't join). I call that a broad-sweeping attempt at a spiritual nuke.

That should be the end of the story...

I'm afraid not. Joseph Smith's assessment of Christianity & every Christian should never be the end of the story like you want to make it. False testimony & world-wide slander spread through a million Mormon missionaries (the number of missionaries the church has sent out thru the years) should never be the end of the story (like you want to make it).

...you look paranoid and powerless when you do it. It’s hard enough doing the right thing as a Christian - so please, until you’ve perfected that, please don’t go around pointing fingers. It’s not your job.

Since you've been pointing fingers at folks on this thread, are we to all assume that you've perfected something which gives you some right of expression the rest of us don't have? , but you folks want to tear them down, and you look paranoid and powerless when you do it. It’s hard enough doing the right thing as a Christian - so please, until you’ve perfected that, please don’t go around pointing fingers. It’s not your job.

IS Mormonism occult? Yes. ... Magic and Occultic beliefs & practices are laced throughout the earliest Mormon origins.

++++++++++++++=

Every one, be careful with MHGinTN’s post about the temple.

There is a lot in there that are conclusions, offered as facts.

Like there are those who will not read and study the anti sights, there are many who will not read any of the pro-LDS sights.

For me, I know the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is God's Church.

Yet I know I might be wrong.

As I read the anti sights and then compare the teachings to the teachings at the pro sights, there have been times I thought their teachings were right. As I study more and found the answer, I have only increased my knowledge about why God's Church is truly God's Church.

There are a couple of things they have said that I have not yet found the answers to, so I keep studying.

So, if you want to know, study both sides for yourself, come up with your own answer.

Do you ever answer a question?
You remind me of someone......
++++++++++++++=

How strange, I remind you that you do the same thing you call bad manners and let you decide if your actions are good manners, or bad manners.

You see, I do not knew if you believe what you are doing is good manners or bad manners.

Since what you do is the same as you are questing about, you will be answering your own question.

If it is bad manners to tell me I will not go to heaven because I do not follow what you believe, then what you ask about is also bad manners by your definition.

Mormons are taught to have foodstocks enough to feed their own families...not lazy folks who aren't diligent enough to lay aside their year's worth of supplies.

In case of a national disaster, short of using a gun, you won't get close to mormon stores.

++++++++++++++++++++++++=

You are half right.

Me, and those I know, will feed those who need it and defend it from those who will steal it.

I even remember reading about a sister that took her food storage to the emergency shelter a priest had set up in his church. It keep the victims feed until the outside helper could get there.

That probably didn’t take too long. If she could get there with 6 months worth of food, I’m sure it didn’t take long for other help to arrive, whatever the emergency was.

You may believe what you wish...for me and mine, we will not depend on the mormons to feed or clothe others, should it come down to a national disaster. The ones I have known personally would not be so inclined.

Many years ago I found that the different denominations and groups had different, and often, opposing ways that they said the Bible tells us we are Saved.

Really funny F, can't answer the question, so you change subject to all the other denominations. I would challenge you to place forward those contradictory ways of salvation - for IF you had really investigated and not just spout typical mormon pabulum - you would find that all find salvation in Jesus alone, by grace and not of works.

There are so many different teachings of the good men and woman that worked to understand God's Word. Men have created a very confused God.

Speaking about mormonism, lessee, no polygamy except being practiced in-secret and against the law of both the land and the church - then make it doctrine although still against the law - then when the law closes in WHOA change doctrine.... Or BY preaches that Adam is God - properly extrapolating upon eternal progression and endorsed by other presidents and prophets through out the many years until - WHOA not popular with the gentiles you are trying to fleece, wala, new doctrine. Confused God - bom presents both standard trinitarism as well as modalism - pogp has polytheism. Yep, the gods of mormonism can't seem to make up their mind.

n a disaster, even a major one of national proportions, Mormons will feed you.

Right, for an example on how mormonism helps those outside of LDS need only go as far as the Lost Boys, those kicked out of FLDS to keep plenty of women available for the more powerful men. Does the mormon church help them - no, Christian groups do though

You either did not read my whole answer, or you chose to mislead about what I said.

Then you throw in another question. Makes it hard for me to back up and show you the original answer.

Here, try again.

“There are so many different teachings of the good men and woman that worked to understand God's Word. Men have created a very confused God.

God has correct the problem by returning His Church to the earth. His Son, Jesus is the head of that Church. Jesus uses His Prophets to help administer the daily needs of His Church.”

Fred, what do you identify as "the daily needs of His Church? And in what way do men help administer to them?

“There are so many different teachings of the good men and woman that worked to understand God's Word. Men have created a very confused God.

And from the previous post - document it - don't recite to me the standard mormon pabulum parroted by the boys on bikes every day. And I answered it too - for IF you had really investigated and not just spout typical mormon pabulum - you would find that all find salvation in Jesus alone, by grace and not of works God has correct the problem by returning His Church to the earth. His Son, Jesus is the head of that Church. Jesus uses His Prophets to help administer the daily needs of His Church.”

And you failed to reply to my answer - what prophecies has Monson made lately? Really - what is the word from the gods today?

===you would find that all find salvation in Jesus alone===
true

Yet there are those who say only SOME will find salvation.

You say we need to do nothing to be saved.

Some say God has chosen his elect before the beginning and the rest are damed and cannot do anything about it. Also, you can do nothing to be unsaved.

Others say by the grace of Christ. He will choose who will be saved, but by your works you can be unsaved.

Others say you must do the works of inviting faith into your life, then you are saved for life.

You just did a good job of changing the subject from the use of food storage in an emergency

to talking about social needs of individual people.

Before you change the subject, you do know that in the Bishop's Storehouse there is enough emergency supplies ready that it can be shipped the next day by the plane load.

With the help of the Air Force, FedEx, UPS, and other bulk haulers, the food and other emergence needs can be on the ground at the closes airport within 48 hours, often less.

Really - what is the word from the gods today?

Good try at pretending we worship more then the one God Head.

Many folks use that to mislead others about our beliefs.

Yet there are those who say only SOME will find salvation.

So name them F - cite their statement of faith, lets evaluate them - note this is the third time I have asked for this. So your stating this over and over does not make it true.

You say we need to do nothing to be saved.

I will say what Paul said in Eph 2:8-9 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

The thief on the cross could do nothing except repent and believe on Jesus, no ordinances or sacraments - yet he was saved.

Some say God has chosen his elect before the beginning and the rest are damed and cannot do anything about it. Also, you can do nothing to be unsaved.

Of course you don't bother to properly frame the teaching. You further fail to consider that God is all knowing and will know who will or will not accept Christ as their Savior. That foreknowledge is what is referred to. Until you can properly express what is being expressed here, perhaps you should do your homework first - otherwise you misrepresent the teaching.

Others say by the grace of Christ. He will choose who will be saved, but by your works you can be unsaved.

Yep, you don't have a clue as to what is being taught by those churches and just regurgitating bicycle boy fertilizer. Why don't you go back to your notes and restate it in a more coherent manner with scriptural back up. We are promised that who ever calls upon the name of the Lord SHALL be saved (Roman 10:13). All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. (Joh 6:37). So please cite scripture to support your misrepresentation.

Others say you must do the works of inviting faith into your life, then you are saved for life.

You are mixing your mormon terminology into the mix, no wonder you don't have a clue as to what you are TRYING to say, but failing miserably. Why don't you go back to your notes and restate with scripture support. Rev 3:20 - Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Since you believe that we can do nothing to change weather we are saved or not, and that only God can change our behavior, why do you waist your time telling I must do something that only God can do?
