Perhaps they didnt know he was a real person?I've heard it said at church that there is an effort to 'create a myth' around Appleseed. I thought that odd because google and wikipedia confirm his existence.
Actually, this is the first I've seen this claim in print. I've also responded to the article directly.

I understood Chapman was (like William Blake) a Swedenborgian, and that he was found dead in the woods sometime in 1847 with a circle of wild animals reverently around him.
Still, Johnny Appleseed isn't the point of the article. They just made a bad comparison.
