I'm joining the Catholic Church next month. Advice/Books/Etc.?

Posted on 05/28/2008 6:05:04 PM PDT by Ultra Sonic 007

Hello fellow Freepers. I believe this is my first post on the Religion forum.

Over the past week or so, I put some thought into something I've been pondering for a while; my spiritual welfare. As it was, I had been part of the 'Sola Scriptua' school of thought (Evangelical Christian). By the Bible and only the Bible. Sounded good enough.

Well...what about before the Bible was put into word? It stuck in my head when reading an article earlier on FR concerning a deconstruction of Sola Scriptura and its inherent weaknesses as a foundation for one's faith.

This, combined with a genuine lack of churchgoing (as a family, we've been uncertain about going to various churches, given that top-down problems with Episcopal/Methodist/etc. churches and their increasing liberalization are a genuine problem for one's spiritual welfare), compelled me to make a decision.

I don't know if my family will follow me, persay, but I'm going to go ahead and take the plunge.

Next month, I'm going to the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle near my home, and I'm joining the Roman Catholic Church.

As is, I have a few volumes of the Magnificat pamphlet and the Catechism of the Catholic Church to read.

Any other pointers from other Catholic Freepers?

Easter is my favorite holiday. I celebrate Our Lord's resurrection on that day.

You do that before you break out the Easter baskets and eggs and stuff, or after???

Our Easter basket, full of our easter dinner is blessed on Holy Saturday. We eat Deviled Eggs. My girls get presents before we go to Holy Mass at 6:30 on Easter Sunday.

How about you?

That’s not my method. Please do not make this personal.

The way this works is that the person making a claim is the one to prove it.

I can go with Eusubius(sic) and Jerome, or I can go with your take on it.

Sorry dude, no contest.

I assume you mean Eusebius, the court theologian to Constantine.

And Jerome who introduced confusion by translating into Latin.

I'm just a 20-year-old who wanted some advice on good books or good websites to read as someone about to enter the Catholic Church.

Dear friend,

Our Lord taught us to pray for those who persecute us. At best, read the postings but ultimately any decision is yours to make. The posters are enjoining you to make your case while berating you for even considering the Catholic Church.

This is not an easy journey for anyone to make. Rest assured of my prayers for you! The Catholic freepers have offered a wealth of resources - so many that they may seem overwhelming. Take you time. There is no rush. This is a very important decision and not one to be taken lightly. I rest with my two offerings - watch EWTN on cable or satellite and especially their Monday night program "Journey Home". Visit the "Coming Home Network" web site. Join the forum. Pose your questions. Read the responses. You will not find anyone there or here who will push you into any decision. What we Catholics will do, however, is provide prayerful support and answer any questions you may have.

You mentioned in your original post that you were planning to attend a particular parish within proximity to your home. Go! Also, make an appointment to meet with the priest. You can be sure that there will be no strong arm tactics to convince you. In fact, I have posted the following link which is the conversion story of a Jew named Roy Schoeman. When he decided to enter the Catholic Church, he was turned away by several 'well meaninged' pastors who told him to be the best Jew he could be. He had already made up his mind and kept on until he met a priest willing to listen. It's a truly remarkable story; one I have never forgotten.

Roy Schoeman's Conversion Story

I have also pinged freeper Annalex to this post. He has a wealth of stories to share, if you are interested.

For some, like St. Paul, it takes a bolt of lightning to get their attention. You have already begun the questioning phase. Turn this over to our Lord for His guidance. He will not fail you.

Pax et Bonum (Peace be with you!)

God Bless You! Welcome home, I would look to organizations like Regnum Christi etc. There is really so much. Remember that as humans nothing is perfect, but God will NEVER let us down. Honestly the Catholic faith has so many God given gifts for you and many of us really take them for granted. I’m sure you won’t.

Do you know of any Protestants who believe they are actually holding God in their hands?

Well maybe not here, but in backward countries...
