Hello fellow Freepers. I believe this is my first post on the Religion forum.
Over the past week or so, I put some thought into something I've been pondering for a while; my spiritual welfare. As it was, I had been part of the 'Sola Scriptua' school of thought (Evangelical Christian). By the Bible and only the Bible. Sounded good enough.
Well...what about before the Bible was put into word? It stuck in my head when reading an article earlier on FR concerning a deconstruction of Sola Scriptura and its inherent weaknesses as a foundation for one's faith.
This, combined with a genuine lack of churchgoing (as a family, we've been uncertain about going to various churches, given that top-down problems with Episcopal/Methodist/etc. churches and their increasing liberalization are a genuine problem for one's spiritual welfare), compelled me to make a decision.
I don't know if my family will follow me, persay, but I'm going to go ahead and take the plunge.
Next month, I'm going to the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle near my home, and I'm joining the Roman Catholic Church.
As is, I have a few volumes of the Magnificat pamphlet and the Catechism of the Catholic Church to read.
Any other pointers from other Catholic Freepers?
"Do" what?
"Give thanks...in remembrance of me."
Or celebrate the Passover as did Yah'shua not some fable of the fourth Century

"Going to be"? It has already begun.
Hang in there, US 007. We're all with you.
Errors do not become truth according to the time of day or how often they're repeated.
"These people" comprehend the RCC's position. By the grace of God, "these people" deny that position and proclaim the truth of Christ risen, according to His word, His will and His Spirit in our lives.
Christ was speaking about Holy Eucharist, not Passover or some fable of the fourth century.
I did notice that my warning was one post late.
I, and I think others, understand that this is what you believe.
(2) The Eucharist has nothing to do with true salvation.
And we understand that you believe this as well.
(3) AND I would think that many Catholics share your concern for those who treat Baptism and the other Sacraments like Magic Fire Insurance, and who think God can be "gamed".
The mere repetition of (1) and (2) is not going to change our minds. Further, disagreeing with your stand does not mean that we think that Baptism and Eucharist have EVERYTHING to do with salvation. It seems to me a brief and careless look at any of our stories of saints indicate that they ALL had a personal commitment to Christ. Having such a commitment is important to us, AND we realize that it is a gift. But Baptism and the Eucharist, we think, still have SOMETHING to do with salvation.
I am confident that there are at least a few Protestants who misunderstand the teaching of their denomination or of Protestantism generally. I remember a poll in Time or Newsweek in the '70s which stated that a majority of Lutherans polled disagreed with Luther about works and justification -- though they didn't know they were disagreeing with him.
Here on FR we have people repeatedly saying we believe what we do not believe, insisting that the belief agaisnt which they rail is a Catholic belief. And when we say that this or that is NOT what the Church teaches we are told what amounts to "I know what your Church teaches better than you do," AND what amounts to "The misunderstandings the some Catholics have of their Church's teaching is the fault of their Church and of its teachings, while (it is more implied than stated) the misunderstandings some Protestants have are certainly not the fault of Protestant Churches or Protestant dogma.
And, more than once it has come down to, "You are wrong, and we know better than you because WE have the spirit and you don't (or you'd agree with us)."
I don't know if that's pride, but when one side says, "DOES!" and the other side says "Does NOT!" things tend to go downhill rapidly.
We’re in substantial agreement.
The Bible says to believe and be baptized. First you have to believe. I believe in baptism but that alone does not save. You first have to BELIEVE, and that means to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved (that’s scriptural too). Then you are baptized as a believer. I know it’s essential to do that.
I don’t follow the magesterium and I am saved because I have put my faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and Him only. He has filled me with His Holy Spirit and guides my steps.
Okay, so I have before. I've always remained on the News/Activism forum. My visits to the Religion forum are few and far between. Even the Pope makes the news, and I've commented on it before. They're just usually in News/Activism.
Forgive me if my memory doesn't recall two minor 'Catholic pings' from months ago (which I often do on News/Activism threads when the topic is of interest to Catholics). Or if I recall pinging a sentence fragment to my father, ImaGraftedBranch, from three years ago.
You know, looking into those threads again, the first one ('That-is-one-tough-Pope' ping) is STILL in News/Activism. The second one is a Ron Paul thread that, IIRC, was originally in News/Activism as an editorial. After getting pinged to it via the Ron Paul list, I pinged NYer and Salvation since it dealt with the Pope. The third one dealing with the 'Mother Without Borders' was also originally in News/Activism. I could be wrong. But my only post in there was a ping to gubamyster and HiJinx, since it deals with immigration.
So what's your issue? That Moderators move threads from one forum to another?
What's the point of this thread, Sonic?
I'm just a 20-year-old who wanted some advice on good books or good websites to read as someone about to enter the Catholic Church.
Do you think God is fooled by this kind of apparent duplicity? Do you think God is glorified by it? God knows this is not your "first post on the Religion Forum" and now so do many of the rest of us.
Apparent in your eye, it seems. I was not trying to be duplicitous. Nor am I now. You're the one who seems to be making a mountain out of a dustbunny.
You also say on your homepage you used to post under the name "Ultra Sonic." Highlighting that name shows that account to still be open. Thus you have two working accounts which, last time I checked, is against FR rules.
I had gotten logged out for some reason way back when, and I had forgotten my password for 'Ultra Sonic'. The e-mail address belonged to our old Internet provider, and was no longer in service. Thus, I went for a new username. Check the account activity for Ultra Sonic and see where it ends. Right about the time where activity for 'Ultra Sonic 007' begins.
Satisfied?
Whatever, Judith Anne. If you want to lump yourselves together, do that.
>>Gosh, in some places you put your right hand on it and swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, so help you God! Hopefully that is being done away with as we speak. <<
Who knows? That might be really telling considering that most of the founding fathers were Protestant. Hnmmmmmm.
Hint of Bible worship? Maybe.

I saw that as well.
The Holy Word of Elohim says it was Passover. The Eucharist is some Pagan Fable created following Constantine the first Pontiff of the Roman church created sunday worship and the Pagan feast of easterSez you.

The bible tells us we can have the mind of Christ, whatever that means to you. Scripture is truth. The magesterium is not the only means to interpreting scripture. Much of it is very simple and clear. You don’t have to be a dummy to interpret most of it. Yes, there are mysteries, allegories, parables and the like but the simple gospel is just that: simple.
>>”These people” comprehend the RCC’s position. By the grace of God, “these people” deny that position and proclaim the truth of Christ risen, according to His word, His will and His Spirit in our lives. <<
Unless you are one of them, you are reading minds and are working against the rules of the forum.
In fact, it can “make the simple wise”
I honestly don’t care if you believe me or not. M
Don’t they make you so happy you decided to become Catholic?
(((hugs)))
Ultra Sonic - Like he did with Job, Satan will do everything in his power to tear you down, level false accusations against you, defame your good name, ridicule your faith, etc. He'll attack you through FR posters, friends, acquaintances, maybe even family members.
You should take great comfort that your conversion has elicited this kind of lashing out. Christ promised each of us a cross to carry, and the revilement of outsiders. If you wanted a self-serving, self-comforting faith, I'm sure Dr. E. can point you in the right direction, but you should rejoice in ad hominem attacks like this.
Pax Vobiscum!
I worship the creator of the universe who from outside of our three and a half dimension world speaks to us if we only have "ears to hear".
I trust Him to have preserved His Word for me to read for a time such as this.
I trust Him to have sent His Spirit to illuminate His Word for me to hear His Words spoken directly to me for my learning and understanding.
I do not trust the fables of man.
Amen!
"Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him." -- Proverbs 30:5
