I'm joining the Catholic Church next month. Advice/Books/Etc.?

Posted on 05/28/2008 6:05:04 PM PDT by Ultra Sonic 007

Hello fellow Freepers. I believe this is my first post on the Religion forum.

Over the past week or so, I put some thought into something I've been pondering for a while; my spiritual welfare. As it was, I had been part of the 'Sola Scriptua' school of thought (Evangelical Christian). By the Bible and only the Bible. Sounded good enough.

Well...what about before the Bible was put into word? It stuck in my head when reading an article earlier on FR concerning a deconstruction of Sola Scriptura and its inherent weaknesses as a foundation for one's faith.

This, combined with a genuine lack of churchgoing (as a family, we've been uncertain about going to various churches, given that top-down problems with Episcopal/Methodist/etc. churches and their increasing liberalization are a genuine problem for one's spiritual welfare), compelled me to make a decision.

I don't know if my family will follow me, persay, but I'm going to go ahead and take the plunge.

Next month, I'm going to the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle near my home, and I'm joining the Roman Catholic Church.

As is, I have a few volumes of the Magnificat pamphlet and the Catechism of the Catholic Church to read.

Any other pointers from other Catholic Freepers?

You think we didn't have reformers IN the Church? We did -- St. Francis for one, St. Ignatius Loyola for another.

The, ahem, Dominican (but who's counting ...) Pope Saint Pius V ...

“Unfortunately, with the credibility issue, I’m only left with the real possibility that this thread is designed as some kind of coup for the RC side in the ongoing RC/Prot discussion.”

That’s absurd. Are you really thinking that there is a coordinated cabal of Catholics designing strategies on a BBS website that we read when, in my case, I rest between tasks and running around?

A coup? Do you seriously believe this?

I’m only left with the real possibility that this thread is designed as some kind of coup for the RC side in the ongoing RC/Prot discussion.

As I thought, the whole thread is a Catholic conspiracy! Be honest, did the Jesuits put you up to this? This ranks right up there with other conspiracy threads about Peter never went to Rome, Simon Magus and the Pseudo-Isidorean Decretals.

Oh yeah, Welcome Home!

The Eucharist is some Pagan Fable created following Constantine the first Pontiff of the Roman church created sunday worship and the Pagan feast of easter

You mean the festival of Pascha as it's termed in non-English European languages? Bashem, hash them words together.

You say that you have just converted to RCatholicism,

[ Big Buzzer Noise! ]

Actually, I'd like to bring this case back into court so I can throw it out again. Where, precisely, does US7 say he has "just converted"?

(Hint: NOWHERE!)

What he in fact says is that he is THINKING, or PLANNING to convert. That would be a discussion of some act in the FUTURE at the time of writing.

The title of the thread, for those whom the scent of blood has momentarily blinded, includes:

"I'm joining the Catholic Church next month",
(Emphasis added for obnoxiousness.)
Let's gather our wits a second. I know that when Catholics aren't being so incredibly dumb that they cannot string two words together to make a mumble, then they are wily beyond earthly reckoning, but I think we just might consider that US7 is being fetchingly and disarmingly candid. It might be that he is not yet infected with the filthy Jesuitickle disease and means and has meant pretty much what he has written: to wit: that he has been thinking about joining the Church for a while, and that he has made up his mind and is asking for some advice for the next few steps of his pilgrimage.

I recognize that this far-fetched conjecture would require our Protestant friends to attribute to someone who disagrees with them ingenuousness, simplicity, and candor. I can see how hard this might be to imagine, how unlikely a stipulation it is to entertain. So I say again that he has not yet joined and so still may maintain a few shreds of decency, threads which will of course be wrenched from him entirely when his conversion is complete and he falls, ensnared into the lethal embraces of the Whore of Babylon.

Well! THAT was exhilarating.

If you read my post again, I said that the existence of US7 RC pings back to 2005 and the lack of Prot pings at all raises reasonable doubts. It does. No denying it.

Actually, better than that, to keep away vampires, always carry a set of keys around with you — I’ve always carried keys with me and I’ve never been attacked by vampires. Now, THAT’s a fact

Ah, Constantine was, according to Xenia a Pontiff of the Church. So too was Snoopy and Big Bird according to.. So, if you keep repeating the same things over the over again, some people believe that constitutes the truth, so if you bash’em, you cash ‘em.

>>US7, DrEck’s post is pretty devastating. In it she lists posts that go back to 2005 through 2007 that show you behaving in a Roman Catholic manner.<<

This is the funniest thing I have seen in a long time and I give you Kudos for answering it with grace. I may have just pointed and laughed.
