Unmasking the Pope and the Catholic System (Open)
Grace To You ^ | Exact date unknown | John F. MacArthur

Posted on 05/17/2008 6:30:09 PM PDT by e.Shubee

John F. MacArthur is no ordinary evangelical. I think that there is something special about him because of the unusual excellence of his book  The Gospel According to Jesus. I consider that book to be the finest exposition on the gospel ever written.

The most surprising thing about John MacArthur is his wide acceptance, given that he believes in the true gospel and takes a strong stand on the historic Protestant understanding of Roman Catholicism. Consider his protestant message, Unmasking the Pope and the Catholic System, delivered shortly after the death of Pope John Paul II, and see if you can either respect or refute his statements.

Unmasking the Pope and the Catholic System is an audio recording of a real sermon. How can you get more authentic than that?

Why not just cut to the chase and start posting Louis Farrakhan's sermons instead?

Huh? At the very beginning, he says "this really isn't going to be a sermon"

"To rescue someone from a damning and false religion..."

No wonder Buddhism is becoming so popular:

"In order to adhere to the principles of "Right Speech", the Buddhist did not engage in backbiting, calumny, defamation, disharmonious conversations, gossip, libel, lying, slander, and vilification."

If you are so thin-skinned that a title can offend you, you do not belong on an "open" thread.

Leave the thread.

Take your complaints and suggestions to this thread.

As they say "a little bit of knowledge is dangerous. The mp3 is not history but rather a polemic that selective gathers some historical facts and selectively omits others. If you want a much better written polemic, read Hillaire Belloc's "How the Reformation Happened." which is brilliant, but emphasizes some facts and omits others in support of a Catholic view. Why don't you read it. "A little bit of history never hurt anyone.

I hope that you see my point.

Well, then John MacArthur's message should be easy to refute, and there should be no need for people who haven't heard it to keep criticizing it.
(They can listen to it and then criticize it.)

"By the way, when it comes to attacking other religions, I don’t recall Catholics doing this on FR. Good for them!" [excerpt]

It does happen.

These discussions need to move on past false allegations and into deeper understanding in a spirit of Christian unity and charity.

Precisely!

Most of the "debates" around here get so bogged down in factual disputes that there is no real discussion of anything else.

In my opinion, many of the most strident Catholic-haters probably aren't even Evangelicals at all--they're leftist trolls in deep cover with a mission to sew division and hatred among Christians.

Because it's not possible that anyone would disagree so stridently with the Catholic Church, and not be a "leftist troll in deep cover"....

You are right, it does happen. But it seems to me non-Catholic Christians add to the number of “anti” Catholic threads more than Catholics add to the number of “anti” non-Catholic Christian threads. What do you think?

I'd say they average out about equal over the last couple of years - today's just a little lopsided. Five'll getcha ten that we see a rash of new "Sola Scriptura is a Protestant invention", "Protestant pastor arrested for child molestation", and "Former Presbyterian bows to Mary" threads from the usual suspects in the next day or so.

Sure they can, but I'm sure that it just gets tiresome for them when there are new similar threads being posted all the time. People just wish that some of the anti-catholic crowd would just take the time to do some research from other more objective sources before posting so much factually false material. What they are doing here is the equivalent of going to the Daily Koz for their "facts" on President Bush. We simply expect better from people posting on a conservative site.

I converted to Catholicism back in 1987. I was enlightened by the Holy Spirit that Catholicism is truly following in Christ’s footsteps.

Thank you for your kind words. I have found that converts are the most appreciative and spiritual within the Catholic Faith. I also agree with the poster that only an enemy of our conservative christian beliefs would post this information to cause problems. Real Christians will always love and support each other no matter what the differences. I don't agree with Rev. Wright, I think he's Wrong. Still I don't hate him, I simply would never vote for him or anyone associated with him. My prayers go out to all lost "Christians".

I have actually seen a number of threads posted by catholics that took an offensive(v. defensive) position towards evangelicals/protestants.

As to who does it more, I haven't calculated the ratios.
So to say that one side does it more than the other, would be pure speculation.

I think you’re wrong, but then I reckon it could be hard to be impartial depending on whose ox is getting poked at. I actually thought you were some sort of weird disgruntled Catholic for a long time, Alex, what with all the Catholic threads from you.

Gosh. I think the expression of your laughter is a personal attack on my religion /sarc.

I find it amusing when folks draw parallels between a position they hate and one that is completely not relevant, just to divert attention away from the issue. Calling people who question or refute RCC doctrine that ain’t in Scripture get called “Catholic haters!” frequently. Scripture tells us that telling Truth is a form of true friendship and/or love. Any parent understands this.

John MacArthur and Daily Koz?

Thats an equation, intended or otherwise, that I didn't expect to see.

Stridency is one thing, but stridency is not the issue here. There are many catholics and protestants who are strident, but who post facts accurately in good faith and argue on the theology. This type of stridency in pursuit of truth is beneficial.

However, if people deliberately misrepresent facts, than the shoe does fit the behavior of leftists. The behavior undermines the very principle of Free Republic. As you have been a positive and often witty voice in these forums, I am frankly surprised that you would treat this particular issue so flippantly

Well, then John MacArthur's message should be easy to refute, and there should be no need for people who haven't heard it to keep criticizing it. (They can listen to it and then criticize it.)

Well Sandyeggo did listen to it and posted the following excerpts:

1. In the long war on truth, the most formidable, relentless, and deceptive enemy has been Roman Catholicism.
2. It is an apostate, corrupt, heretical, false Christianity.
3. It is a front for the kingdom of Satan.
4. The true Christianity of the Lord Jesus Christ has always understood this.
5. Are (Catholics) a mission field or co-laborers for Christ? That is what is at stake. Do we embrace them as fellow-believers in Jesus Christ?

The answer to Point 5 was a resounding NO.

The refutation of this is Christ established a Church, appointed Simon as it’s first earthly leader, changed his name to Peter gave, gave him the keys with the authority to bind and loose and promised to protect it. That Church is the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

To deny this is to infer Christ can't keep his promises.
