"Not of works" refers to grace being not of works. Grace Alone, not Faith Alone.
Glad to hear you say that...Since that condemns every sacrement your church ever invented...
But you are right...Grace is without works...Justification is without works and FAITH is without works...It's ALL free...
Rom 4:4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
What is the reward??? Grace??? Not a chance...The reward is life eternal...
Rom 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Faith...NOT faith with works...Not faith and any sacrements...Faith plus NOTHING...
Rom 4:6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth RIGHTEOUSNESS WITHOUT WORKS,
That is not accurate.
Romans 4 explains the Catholic teaching that works done for reward or as a legal obligation are not salvific, and that especially, circumcision is not salvific. It does not teach salvation by faith alone. How can it? Just a few chapters before that, St. Paul said
6 [God] will render to every man according to his works. 7 To them indeed, who according to patience in good work, seek glory and honour and incorruption, eternal life: 8 But to them that are contentious, and who obey not the truth, but give credit to iniquity, wrath and indignation. 9 Tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that worketh evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek. 10 But glory, and honour, and peace to every one that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.(Rom 2)
