with subsequent stops in Philadelphia, Houston, and Washington

I don't see Washington, state or DC for that matter, on the official schedule linked to above. It would be nice to try to see him if he actually is stopping in the area.

The Marronites are the only Eastern Rite Catholics who have an alter looking like the Western or Latin Rite.

BTW I just picked up yesterday at my local Catholic book store the beautiful artistic design book of “Joseph and Chico”, a children’s book about B16 as told by his cat Chico. =^..^=

Tough time for the Cardinal to be out of Lebanon. He is, to say the least, an extraordinary man from what I hear from my Lebanese co-religionists.

He is scheduled to meet with President Bush on May 22. The opposing forces in Lebanon are not happy about this.

Lebanese archbishop calls for reconciliation amid violent clashes

Ironically, the last time he met with the President, the 30 day war broke out in Lebanon, closing the airport. The US military helped him return via a neighboring country and then flying him in by helicopter. Back then, I posted an AP photo of Cardinal Sfeir emerging from the helicopter, wearing a headset.

Indeed. See my above post to Pyro. The Cardinal is 88 years old! This journey is a very ambitious one. Ironically, as I pointed out to Pyro, the last time he left the country on such a mission, the 30 day war broke out.

If there is one consolation to be derived from the political situation in Lebanon, it is that the Maronite Catholic Church is alive and well and thriving on nearly every continent of the world. Perhaps, through the persecution of christians in Lebanon, the Maronite Church has cooperated with the will of God in spreading the faith to the four corners of the globe. This is physically manifested to us each week when the priest consecrates the wine. He tips the chalice towards the four corners of the earth to symbolize that our Lord died for all mankind.
