In all my years on FR, I’ve never seen a concerted effort to
throw a single mormon out of the conservative party. I welcome
all conservatives, regardless of faith - and that includes
mormons, of course.
That does not mean I agree with mormons on mormon religious
threads - or Jehovah’s Witnesses on religious threads, or
Hare Krishna’s on religious threads, or lots of FReepers on
threads of a variety of topics. If we all agreed, there wouldn’t be much of a discussion. We could all just sit
around holding hands and saying, “yep! me too!”

I agree with you regarding the religion forums. Unless you have an agreement to be left along (Caucus), if you talk about your religion in a religion thread, you should expect to have people argue against your religion, just as if you post your political opinion in a political thread you have to expect people to disagree with you.
Since I don’t like to argue with people about their religion in a political forum, I try to stay out of the religion threads (I occasionally end up in a thread because I look at ALL threads in my main search).
I believe the snide comments and personal attacks are meant to discourage people from participating in the forum. And while some opposed Romney for other reasons, there were some who clearly said they could never vote for a Mormon for office.
Now, maybe they did not think through the ramifications. But if you are going to tell a Church that they are not welcome to be your candidates, you can hardly expect them to vote for YOUR candidate.
