Christians do not celebrate the passover but commemorate Christ’s death.

No, we commemorate Christ's death(sacrifice for sin) AND Resurrection. The death is only 1/2 the story and is nothing without the Resurrection.

I was drawing a distinction between what Jesus started at that last meal and the passover meal.
Please note that Jesus said He was inaugurating a new covenant. The old Law covenant had been established with the death of a sacrificial animal so the new would be brought into force with the sacrifice of Christ. His death is what Christians are commanded to commorate.
