FLDS Parents Could Face Charges for Abandoning their "Lost Boys"
KCPW News ^ | February 14, 2008

Posted on 02/22/2008 9:11:12 AM PST by Zakeet

They're called the "Lost Boys," the teenagers kicked out of their homes and communities by leaders of the polygamist Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to ensure there's an ample supply of single, young women who will one day become plural wives. Representative Lorie Fowlke (R-Orem), is running a bill to make this abandonment a felony.

"Estimates are that we've had more than 1,000 children - primarily in southern Utah - thrown out of their homes," Fowlke says. "What we were trying to do with this bill is criminalize this behavior and send a message to this community that they can't just throw away their children."

H.B. 23 adds child abandonment to the definition of child abuse, and makes it a felony crime. It also adds an enhancement if a parent or organization benefits from the child's abandonment to further an illegal enterprise, such as polygamy. This is the case with the FLDS church, says Roger Hoole, a lawyer who represents some of the displaced young men and sits on the board for the Utah Association for Justice. He says the church benefits from kicking out young men who would compete for plural wives. This, he says, has devastating consequences.

"There's a huge impact that's coming, like a tsunami, that's going to hit the state of Utah, when these boys get a little older and realize what has happened to them and get angry," Hoole says. "There's a real problem here."

Fowlke's bill gained unanimous support in a Senate committee this morning, and now heads to the full Senate for consideration.

I don't know about skypilot...but I am not a Catholic.

I respect the Catholic faith. I was raised as a Catholic. I have become an evangelical Protestant - but I still regard Catholics as Christians. I have reasons for opposing some Catholic practices; and I hold some real doctrinal differences with Catholicism, but I in no way regard the Church as a whole as anything but Christian and believers in Jesus Christ.

In short, they are my brothers and sisters in Him.

I hope that was OK. I gave as completely honest an answer as I could.

I am also a former Catholic and now an evangelical Protestant.

I do have an uncle who is a bishop in the Catholic Church, though.

I don't like any faith that contradicts the Christian faith of the Bible, the faith that was once given (the faith that we are to contend for).

What a miscomputation you have, you believe in a Tradition of Men which happens to use the Bible!

The Bible is independent of your adoptive doctrine!

You seem to either have a crystal ball...or are just guessing.

The Bible is independent of your adoptive doctrine!

First of all, how is it that you are able to make more concrete statements about my faith than you are your own?

Secondly, what is this specific Biblical doctrine that you are assigning to me?

Thirdly, this doctrine that you have assigned to me...how is it independent from the Bible?

I will give up any doctrine that is independent of the Bible...Will you give up the teachings contained in the Pearl of Great Price that were imaginatively/fraudulently contrived from egyptian funeral papyri?

Are you willing to concede that Joseph Smith invented this translation?

You have also said that my posts have not been factual...Can you, please, provide the specifics so that I can either provide further documentation or retract, if necessary?

ROFLOL. At least when I write something here, it isn’t twisting some other poster’s words into a smarmy attack. But if you would like me to adopt your tactics, I will happily hold my nose and give it a shot!

I suppose that when you can’t defend your faith...all that you are left with is name calling.

You would know about that, not me. My faith does NOT require me to defend it. The truth of the restored gospel stands on its own.

The truth of the restored gospel stands on its own.

To admit that you are wrong would require great courage on your part. I understand that if you confronted the fact that everything you believe is a lie - you stand to lose much. Your friends, family, business associates - everything.

Is this not correct?

But, you have been given a great gift here. You can choose to give up what is false for the real Christ.

And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. 18He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 20The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? 21Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. 22But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

Don't you wish you hadn't defended polygamous marriage to teenage girls?

You did say that anybody that equated plural marriage to teenage girls with child abuse was insane and an idiot.

Since we are talking about a 14 year old girl (Helen Mar Kimball, among others) marrying a 37 year old Joseph Smith, here...You do realize that you are in a significantly small minority in your defense of Smith, right?

Add to this sad history the actual details...like, Joseph Smith told Helen Mar Kimball that she needed to marry him in order to save her entire family...and that Helen Mar Kimball's mother was heart broken because her daughter had to marry Joseph Smith...and your already significantly small minority becomes even smaller. (add in the details of what Helen Mar Kimball thought about her "ceremony" with Joseph Smith and you might just be standing alone!)

I know it makes you feel better to deny it...because I would feel dirty to, if a so-called prophet, that started my religion, was married to, at least, (33) females...(11) of which were between the ages of 14 and 20.

Go ahead...keep denying that you defended plural marriage with teenage girls but the thread still contains post numbers 88, 89, 1033 and 1037. The record speaks for itself.

There was no twisting of words...In fact, I asked you to provide the specific instance of my twisting of words and (surprise, surprise) you didn't respond.

Your credibility, in regard to the twisting of words claim, may be to the level of Joseph Smith's credibilty as it relates to funeral papyri transaltions (among many other things).

Jesus Christ is my Master. He is the Son of God and the Savior of the world. He has given even you the gift of eternal life in a perfect body. I urge you to repent lest ye be judged.

OMM is back, reality spill in the produce section.

Just for another nonsensical post and run.

He hates what he posted, earlier, about polygamous marriage to teenage girls not being child abuse.

See posts 88, 89, 1033 and 1037.

I gave him an opportunity to set the record straight...but, as of yet, he has not taken it.

Jesus said, "Most assuredly I tell you, there is no one who has left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or land, for my sake, and for the gospel's sake, but he will receive one hundred times more now in this time, houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and land, with persecutions; and in the age to come eternal life."
