Covenant of the Eyes

Job 31:1 "I have made a covenant with my eyes; How then could I gaze at a virgin?" Job who is accredited with being a man of perfect integrity and a man who feared God and turned away from evil is showing us a depth of his heart that has kept him the man of integrity that he is. Covenant's are not contracts and are most assuredly not to be broken. Job has refused to bow to the low standards of his culture and has risen to a level that is blessed by God. Job understands that the eyes are windows to the soul. Job knows that when the eyes look in the wrong direction that it will effect his life and more severely it will effect his relationship with God. To "gaze" is to look long enough that the mind begins to think and understand things that it ought not be thinking and understanding. It is highly dangerous to look upon things that ought to be abstained from. The very fall of man was the result of looking in the wrong direction. The woman "saw" that the tree was good for food (Gen. 3:6). Job's covenant with his eyes had kept his heart from many an impurity that would have brought shame upon the name of his God. Sin always comes in such a deceptive manner that it convinces us that it is not a big deal. Many a confessing believer today justifies what he watches on TV, looks at in a magazine, and looks at in the public square. It is the amazing deception of sin that one has the ability to minimize the effects of what is "gazed" upon during everyday life. The world is intentionally producing things via media for the sole purpose of destroying and desensitizing the mind into thinking sin is no big issue. The number of people who have fallen into sexual sins (ministers, teachers, deacons, teenagers, etc.) is beyond counting. To think that you are not affected by what you look at is a revelation of the deception that has already taken part in your own heart. What is needed? Dear friend, that you would be motivated by your love for God to make a "covenant with your eyes." Make a covenant that you will not look upon those things forbidden by God nor "set any unclean thing before your eyes (Ps. 101:3)." Pray that the Lord would grant you a desire for purity that would cause you to refrain from being dragged down in the mire and wickedness of the impurities of the world. Ask the Lord that he would help become a person of integrity.

Because of the truth: Pastor: J. Randall Easter II Timothy 2:19 "Our God is in heaven and does whatever He pleases."(Ps. 115:3) "He predestined us according to the good pleasure of His will."(Eph. 1:5) Those who have been saved have been saved for His glory and they are being made holy for this is the will of God. Are you being made holy? Spurgeon says, "If your religion does not make you holy it will damn you to hell."
