Farm workers who toil to pick tomatoes for Burger King's sandwiches earn 40 to 50 cents for every 32-pound bucket of tomatoes they pick, a rate that has not risen significantly in nearly 30 years. Workers would have to pick 2.5 tons of tomatoes just to earn minimum wage for a typical 10-hour day.
But instead of joining other fast-food chains in paying an extra penny per pound for its tomatoes, this Christmas Burger King is working to undermine those chains' existing agreements with the Coalition for Immokalee Workers. As a result, tomato pickers in Florida are facing the prospect of losing the first significant raise some of them have seen in nearly 30 years.
Tell Burger King to stop being a scrooge and start paying farm workers fair wages!
There’s generally a huge difference between NCC churches and those who are not members. http://www.ncccusa.org/members/index.html
I dunno... maybe generally. er... what I mean is, just because they’re NOT on there is not an indication of Biblicity.
There is a certain phenomenon called “file cabinet orthodoxy” by Bob DeWaay (who is nondenominational but leans toward reform Baptist) — where you can read the official statement of faith and it sounds just fine — and yet that is NOT what the church itself preaches and teaches.
In fact, isn’t NCC more mainline? The smaller evangelical denominations such as the Evangelical Covenant, Baptist General Conference, etc aren’t listed on there. And I wouldn’t touch those with a ten foot pole.
One has to wonder...
and not sure why Sojo is so worried about the tomato pickers either, and not the pickle pickers, et al
BTW you can probably still support BK without eating tomatoes. ;-)
So what?
You don't like armored polar bears?
Yes, the NCC is primarily mainline (or old line) churches who are post-Christian in theology and liberal in practice. Not being on the list is not necessarily the sign of a solid church, but being on the list is the sign of a church from which one should flee.
The World Council of Churches also helpfully provides a list of bodies to avoid:

Par35 Here's another place to find religious organizations to avoid:
Oh look it's my old denomination! The Evangelical Covenant Church
And there are 60 religious/freedom of beliefs NGO's listed. Other religious groups are listed under activities such as "poverty" etc.

Freep-mail me to get on or off my pro-life and Catholic Ping List:
Please ping me to all note-worthy Pro-Life or Catholic threads, or other threads of interest.
After scanning the whole list, I’d agree that there is a presumption of guilt for any organization on that list, but I did find a couple that I’d otherwise consider generally acceptable.
The Boy Scouts of America was on the list, and they have at great cost stood up to the homosexual lobby. The Salvation Army is also on the list, and while I disagree with them theologically, they certainly don’t fall to the level of many other organizations on that list.
Others, such as MEDECINS SANS FRONTIERES are leftist in orientation, but they do do beneficial work in some mighty sorry locations.
And finally, there are a few that don’t keep their political agenda, if any, on their front doorstep, for example INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR BRIDGE AND STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING (IABSE)
Never bothered us. The only thing we were warned about was to keep our fingers away from the mouths of the mink.
I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about ~ I’m not an SDA. I’m not a member of any church, I haven’t been to church since 1944.
Church membership is not the prerequisite to being saved.
Grin! I forgot about this thread, but the seed was there. Got a whopper with cheese over the weekend.
