Vandals glue locks on church doors shut

PHILADELPHIA - You could call it a stick-up of a different kind. Vandals put glue in the locks of several churches in Philadelphia's Tacony and Mayfair sections, making it difficult for parishoners to get inside for Sunday services.

At least eight churches of various denominations were targeted on and near Tyson Avenue.

In some cases, the vandals broke off keys inside locks.

Worshippers at one church used a drill to get their doors open. At another church, a member brought a blow torch from home.

Pastor Arthur Johnson says his Tacony Baptist Church was among those affected. He calls it "really comical." He says the "devil is trying to tell us we are doing something right for the Lord."

Lt. Frank Vanore says police are investigating. No arrests have been made.

A massive scale hate crime and no national headlines. Anyone surprised?

While I don’t condone it I don’t automatically think it rises to the level of a hate crime. It sounds more like a stupid teenage prank.

Not suprised, if it is Christian, expect to be attacked for being Christian and for the Lord.

You would not see this happen if houses of worship were moques.

Yikes...I used to go to the Latin Mass at Our Lady of Consolation in Tacony. I wonder if it was one of the ones vandalized.

It would have been national news if these had been abortion clinics.

Well, they always profile the Vandals. I say look at the Goths or Visigoths for once! Gluing locks is definitley more their M.O.

Hmm, I find it interesting that the Latvian Orthodox church didn’t get hit. And the sign, “Now accepting converts - our doors are open!” makes me all the more suspicious.

Had this been eight Mosques hit with vandalism a Federal Task Force would have been called in to investigate.
