WTVG--October 15, 2007 - Religion and homosexuality are at odds at Lourdes College. A gay, lesbian and transgender organization has been embraced on campus and some students are upset.
Catholics don't believe in homosexuality. The bible says it is detestable and the pope says it is wrong. So why are the Franciscan sisters supporting a new gay organization on campus? The answer makes some people very angry. Prism is a GLBT, or gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender organization on the campus of Lourdes College. The co-advisor of the group is a nun.
Sister Ann Carmen Barone says, "You can't be Christian and not remember Jesus invitation and command to love one another as I have loved you. Jesus says repeatedly, "I came for all of us"."
The mission of the GLBT group is to acknowledge the gay population on campus and bring awareness.
The president of Prism Sheena Kadi says, "The purpose of this organization is to have a venue, a safe haven and to have these discussions. I would extend the invitation to come down to one of our meetings."
You won't find Dan Gosbeth, Lourdes College alumni, at any meetings. Dan is appalled by the new group.
"I as a Catholic say this is wrong. This is what my pope says, this is what the Holy Father says, and this is what the morals of the Catholic Church have always believed.
The bible states in Leviticus 18:22, "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination."
Sister Ann Carmen says she isn't taking the bible word for word.
"I think one of the challenges for us is to put ourselves in another historical context and see what that meant and what the people living were like."
Dan Gosbeth accuses the college of selling out their faith for higher enrollment.
"I'm sorry, my faith and my principles are not up for sale and are not going to be compromised."
The president of Prism says she has more than 50 members so far and they haven't even had their first meeting. This school is one of more than 50 Catholic universities that have a GLBT group on campus.
Gays at Catholic universities aren't a new topic of discussion, just with different takes. In June 2005, the New Jersey court of appeals dismissed a discrimination lawsuit against Seton Hall University. Student Anthony Romeo claimed the Catholic college violated the state law against discrimination when it refused to recognize his gay and lesbian group. But the appeals court decided the school was exempt. But another school has taken a different approach.
In 2005, Chicago's DePaul, the nation's largest Catholic university, became the first Catholic university to offer a Queer Studies program. It examines the history, politics and culture of LGBTQ individuals.

I think I know why.
So there are a lot of liberal dissident Catholics around in so-called “Catholic” education, so what? It’s hardly breaking news. It’s not like there aren’t a lot of Protestant-affiliated schools around teaching the gay activist heresy...

Catholics believe same sex attraction is a weakness that some people have. It may be genetic or occur from early developmental problems, but it an innate weakness that makes those with the problem prone to sin.
This is in the same category as alcoholism/ drug abuse, heterosexual promiscuity, bad temper, a tendency toward violence, sociopathy etc.
Because the tendency is not chosen by the person, the fact that a person gives in to the temptation makes the sin less "serious" than if it is chosen. In Catholicism, "moral" sins are those committed with a clear decision to sin...often sexual sins are committed when the mind is clouded with passion or drugs or alcohol, so the "sin" is less serious...that's why greed and pride often are worse sins: The person has control of his cold blooded behavior.
However, with the help of God, such impulses can be controlled. Gays can become saints if they daily choose to control their impulses to sin. This often means to stay away from "gay bars" and on line pornography, where the temptations would become too strong for one's will, in the same way alcoholics have to stay away from bars.
in summary, having same sex temptations might not be a choice, but gay sexual activity, including following the promiscuous gay lifestyle, are choices and therefore are sins.

Not exactly. FOr decades, the US seminaries have taken the line you have (although for probably less idealistic reasons). The result was that they directly disobeyed the Vatican by permitting homosexuals into the priesthood, with disastrous consequences. In fact, it seems that homosexuals dominated the American Catholic hierarchy by the 1980s. The Cardinals of Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, and Washington were all homosexual, or at least gravely compromised by accomodating known sexual predators.
Homosexuality is a concupiscence, which is both a result of sin, and an inclination to commit sin. The tendency is not chosen by the person in the strictest sense, but is a manifestation of the consequences of sin. A homosexual is not necessarily more likely to be more sinful, but rather there sinful tendencies are simply revealed in this manner. Given the struggles many men have against pornography, masturbation, sexual compulsion, unchasteness, etc., singling this one concupiscence out for hatred and disgust is unjust.... but that hardly means it is an affliction of the pure-hearted.

She’s lost. She’s bought into the historicity garbage. I wonder does she still believe in the Presence?
