Your statement is incorrect- The key idea of this prophecy is that Damascus is utterly destroyed, never to be inhabited again. It can also be taken to mean that Syria itself will lose it's crown, or that Syria will cease to be as a sovereign nation for all time.
Neither of these have occurred, even to this very day.
They've only been "sovereign" since the middle of the 20th century.
That circumstance enables Damascus to be destroyed again!
Like the O.J. scandal blending into the Smith scandal, you get prophecies "recycled" over and over and over.

Once Damascus fell, Syria never became its own nation again until 1945... about 3,000 years later. And in that time it has been dominated by the Soviet Union, Egypt, and Iran.
