My best guess is that they are locked into the mind-set of the Reformers, looking at texts in the Greek and Hebrew pretty much as Joseph Smith looked at his golden tablets, with the new biblical scholarship of that time as the equivalent of Smith’s spectacles. Certainly Luther and Calvin, especially Calvin acted as though they had been granted special revelations from God. It must have been chilling to look Calvin in the eye. He had absolutely no doubt that he possessed the truth and was willing to impose his will on others as if it were God’s will.
