The woman had one palm up and held her husband’s hand with the other.

LOL! Abuse multitasking! How efficient! Father, forgive them . . .

Well actually, handholding is not an abuse, it’s an innovation. I got the big smackdown in the past calling it an abuse. Then you get the libs screaming “You think everything is an abuse!”

No posture is mentioned in the GIRM. This doesn’t mean that it’s okay to hold hands or use the Orans (especially the orans, it’s a priestly posture), just as we cannot lay prostrate during the Our Father. We are only allowed to use the postures that one can find in a Vatican document. Deacons are told that they can use this posture but Altar Servers are not. The Laity is NEVER given the “Hands Extended” direction in any Vatican document, while this direction is given many times to the priest.

Laity using the Orans, IMO came from the idea that we are all priests. So do what the priest is doing. The handholding is more a hippie holdover. Both should be discouraged. Wanna hold hands with your spouse or kids, cool. Stop the Daisy Chaining around the church, especially the little lift at “For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory....” deal. We look stupid.
