Historic Bennington church to sell (United Methodist)

BENNINGTON — After serving a congregation for almost 175 years, the United Methodist Church in the core of downtown on Main Street is up for sale.

The Rev. Janice Palm, Embury District superintendent of the United Methodist Church Troy Conference, said the church had recently been deconsecrated and Methodist services will now be offered at the Bennington Free Library.

Palm said the United Methodist Church wanted to maintain a presence in Bennington. Members will be looking for either an existing building or a new site to build a new church.

Palm said rising costs created the need to sell the building, built in 1909 on the site of another United Methodist Church.

-snip-

The selling price is listed as $550,000.

Shrinking mainline church.

In Bennington, VT, I would imagine all churches are shrinking. This isn't exactly an area known for its piety.

Good point. Time to send some missionaries to the heathens.

It was deconsecrated the minute a woman pastor stepped up to the pulpit.

The Rev. Janice Palm, Embury District superintendent of
the United Methodist Church Troy Conference
...snip...

The congregation made the decision with the approval of the Troy
Conference Bishop Susan Hassinger

...snip...

The pastor at the United Methodist Church of Bennington is the
Rev. Deborah Estey.

One does wonder...
Did the men get booted from this church body...
Or did they simply leave for one of those thriving evangelical churches?

Either way, it sounds like The United Methodist Church (at least
in VT) might as well call itself The Earth Mother Man-Hater Church.
