24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

I can't agree more with you as to the serious nature of the LORD'S SUPPER and what it represents.

The Corinthians were rebuked by Paul not because they didn't act properly around transformed bread and wine. They were rebuked for their overindulgence and impatience with the poorer members of the church. The poorer members were coming later because they had to work till sun down on the first day of the week and were only being left small portions.

ICOR. 11:17-21 Now in giving these instructions I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse. For first of all, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you,......For in eating, each one takes his own supper ahead of others; and one is hungry and another is drunk.

We had a church carry-in once, and one of the members brought a really awesome strawberry layer cake.

As the service ended, they ran to the table, took off their cake, put it on their own table, and doled out pieces to their friends.....the select.

I didn’t say anything at the time, but that is essentially what Paul was condemning at Corinth.

When the ordinance becomes routine and “common” it is time to remind people of the signicance. the Lord’s Supper is an actualization of the Last Supper, just as the Passover meal is an actualization of the Exodus meal. Actualization means to put oneself back to the time of the original.

In my church the refreshing at times, if you will, of the ordinance has taken the form of the reminder of the sacrifice; the reminder of the dangerous nature of the ordinance; the standing around the table as the Exodus Jews did at Passover and changing the symbols so people had to think about what they were doing. these changes aren’t for change sake or to sensationalize it; but to cause people to look again at what tand how they are celebrating this meal.
