Ahhh, so this is why some Catholic clergy takes a vow of poverty.

“I don’t believe I ever preached a message on money,” he said. “But I do believe … God can want you to have a better house. God wants you to be able to send your kids to college.”

I’ve come up with a new slogan for my herbal pills that will compete against viagra and cialis, “God wants you to have a bigger, longer lasting...”

IIRC, a new synagogue would start when there were 10 families in a city. Since these ten families paid tithe, plus other offerings, the rabbis salary would be the average of his congregation.

In the midwest that may mean working for 20,000 per year. On the coasts, that may mean scraping by on 100,000+.

Larger churches also are known for better stipends to traveling evangelists. A love offering is usually much different when coming from 1,000 folks than 10 folks.

The article also mentioned T D Jakes. He takes no salary from The Potters House and donates (I heard) over a million per year. He also pays taxes on his earned income.

Protestants have not cornered the market on corruption. Not by a long shot.
