So many quotable lines in this one. = D

No kidding, for example:
For 40 years frenzied efforts have been made to stamp out the Traditional Mass and yet it has flourished. It is now past the point where there is the remotest prospect of extinguishing it. As Pope Benedict said in his explanatory letter accompanying the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum ("Of Supreme Pontiffs"), one of his reasons for freeing the Old Mass was the number of young people now flocking to it.

I don’t think you’re suspicious, more like intuitive. This is psuedo-political, leftist, feminist junk cloaked with some feel good pop-psychology and interpersonal skills, nothing to do with Catholicism at all really.

Cardinal O’Malley, you are not being a good boy, the Holy Father gave you a special honor of being one of only two American bishops to attend the sub secreto meeting, and you come back and foist this gobbledegook on your flock instead of begging a few FSSP priests to come over and help get some extraordinary masses going...now that would ‘renew’ your Archdiocese!

Myers (sp.) I think is supposed to be vaguely “in charge” or lend them credibility or something. As I say, they’re not very forthcoming.

Oh, but he said himself there's no demand for the TML in New England -- or in the US for that matter! He thinks he and Burke were invited only to let them know what the rest of the (benighted?) world is doing -- sort of a Vatican News Network!

And this RENEW idiocy is a three-year process! As I said, where's the financial transparency on the part of RENEW? IOW, who's paying for this travesty?

My sister actually remembered hearing this from Joseph Campbell (not a Catholic, incidentally), so I checked on the internet and found the quote on a blog

Campbell: There’s been a reduction of ritual. Even in the Roman Catholic church, my God — they’ve translated the Mass out of ritual language and into a language that has a lot of domestic associations. The Latin of the Mass was a language that threw you out of the field of domesticity. The altar was turned so that the priest’s back was to you, and with him you addressed yourself outward. Now they’ve turned the altar around — it looks like Julia Child giving a demonstration — all homey and cozy.

Moyers: And they play a guitar.

Campbell: They play a guitar. They've forgotten that the function of ritual is to pitch you out, not to wrap you back to where you have been all the time.

The quote's from "Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth" -- it's on DVD.

In Masses celebrated without the people... on any day except in the Sacred Triduum.

Tax-man is certainly correct. It just refers to private masses being prohibited on those days.

You might do your priest a favor and clear up his confusion.

do seminarians even study Latin ?

Yes. I'm nearly certain that seminarians are required to take 12 credit hours of Latin during pre-theology. I'm not sure what is required for Theology studies.

Myers (sp.) I think is supposed to be vaguely “in charge” or lend them credibility or something.

As I recall, the original architect of Renew was Abp. Gerety, a former Abp. of Newark. Gerety was a problem in many ways. For some reason, Myers signed on to renew the Renew program. I think there was a FR thread about it at the time.

I found the thread from 2003 when I started looking: Time for Renew-al (Abshp. Dolan to implement Renew 2000). Apparently, they used to be a lot more, well, flamboyant -- outright Wiccan elements, etc. They seem to have toned down quite a bit -- I just question whether they really have or the blandness of their website and questionnaire is just a form of omerta (if that's the word I want).

While I have certainly witnessed some of what the author describes in his rant against the Novus Ordo in no way does the Mass of Paul VI need to be Celebrated in such grotesque fashion.
