Pope's comments irrelevant to non-Catholics (CNN Opine)
CNN ^ | By Roland S. Martin

(CNN) -- Non-Catholics who are up in arms of the proclamation by Pope Benedict XVI that the only true church in the world is that of Catholicism shouldn't even bother getting upset. Just chalk it up to an old man trying to get a little attention.

For him to even suggest that only the Catholic Church can provide true salvation to believers in Christ shows that he is wholly ignorant of the Scriptures that I have known all my life.

Sorry, let me take that back. I've really only known the Bible for the last 13 of my 38 years. That's because those first 25 years were spent as a die-hard Catholic.

>>Even the speed of light is not considered “settled” by some.<<

That would be reasonable if the poster acknowoledged the statement and disagreed back.

Rather what is happening here is stealth slander and a quick change of subject.

I’m all for discussion, if this issue was being discussed. However, the quotese are being igored and lies repreated. If this was President Bush and not B16, the poster would have been banned. I’ll default to you on issue. Closing one thread for the lack of charity, is good. Stopping someone from intentionally misquoting a public figure, makes us credable.

Even the Pope.

In Levada's case he REPEATEDLY supported molesters by various ploys. In the case of the Portland Diocese's suit, I believe there were upwards of 250 different claims that were made.

How many of those 250 incidents occurred during the time Levada was at Portland? Specifically, how was Levada an "advocate" for sexual molestation?

The facts from one of the cases cited regarding an abusive priest named Joseph Baccellieri:
  1. There have been seven sexual abuse claims made against Baccellieri. All of the claims date to the period of 1971-1975.

  2. Levada served as the archbishop of Portland during the period 1986-1995.

  3. Levada removed Baccellieri from ministry in 1992 when he first became aware of allegations against Baccellieri dating to the 1970's. The accusers wished their names to remain confidential. Levada took immediate action by removing Baccellieri from ministry. He was placed on leave for counseling and intensive therapy.

  4. Levada restored Baccellieri's priestly duties after he completed extensive therapeutic treatment, after consultation with his therapists, and after determining that he had been truly repentant and could be trusted to engage in limited ministry with proper supervision. Other conditions imposed for him to return to ministry were continuous counseling and therapy, regular reporting by his therapist to the Archdiocese, close monitoring by the Archdiocese, limitations on ministry activities, residence outside a parish setting or under the vigilance of other priests familiar with his situation.

  5. In 1994, Baccellieri was allowed to resume restricted priestly duties, under close supervision, with the proviso that he couldn't be around children and couldn't counsel adults or children.

  6. There had been no reports of any inappropriate behavior with minors by Baccellieri since his return to ministry in 1994.

  7. Baccellieri was retired in 2002.
Was Levada guilty of believing Baccellieri’s therapists? Yes. Was he guilty of advocating sexual molestation in this case? No. Let's see the proof.

Me: Catholicisms teachings don’t match the Bible.

You: Just as the sun rises in the east you never fail to display your ignorance on these threads.

Me: There you go again. Silly name calling.
Forget the FACT that I am right. Catholicism is not Christian. Never has been and never will be. Those of us that follow what the Bible teashes will have nothing to do with Catholicism.

Truth is an absolute defense.

Although ENABLER would probably be a better choice of words.

That was spoken like a true attorney, without addressing the question at hand. We weren't asking for a defense. We were looking for the definition and criteria of libel.

Ding, ding, ding!
We have a winner!

While I’m sure this poster does not stand for every Protestant FReeper, the proof is in the pudding, gang.

We Catholics are not Chirstians.

But, like I care what this poster thinks.

Catholicism is not Christian.

Would you call that a defect?

You better watch out, a howling pack of Protestants will soon be on your case. I'm sure.

The pity of this is, all the Catholics I know were pleased when Levada was taken to Rome. We knew he would hate it, and could easily be controlled.

But you know us EVIL Catholics!

The CNN (surprise!) commentator said: Sorry, let me take that back. I've really only known the Bible for the last 13 of my 38 years. That's because those first 25 years were spent as a die-hard Catholic.

No, that's because those first 25 years were spent as a SUPER-DUMB, NOT-LISTENING, DUH-I-DON'T-GET-IT Catholic.

Which made you easy pickins to become what you are now.

And we thank God for all the traffic you must have past moving in the opposite direction: those who have left the errors you're mired in now have made some of the best Catholic converts we've been blessed with in a long time!

Oh and you're welcome for the big thank you I know you meant to send out to your former Church for having put together that Bible you're so fond of at the Third Council of Carthage, which - of course - sent their work to Rome for the Pope, as Successor of Peter (Matt 16:18) to ratify. You've got most of it in your Protestant Bible, except the stuff Martin Luther took out because it didn't support his denial of Purgatory, etc. He would have zapped James as well ("Faith without good works is dead") but another apostate priest like himself, Melanchton, stopped him. Yup - good luck! I don't know which is sadder: where you've ended up spiritually or where you've ended up on television!

SNAP Press Statement

Statement Regarding Bishop Levada's Appointment
to Major Vatican Post

May 13, 2005

Statement by Dan McNevin, SNAP Bay Area Spokesman

"We're very disappointed that Levada has been chosen. It's an insensitive and unwise decision. Regarding abuse in the San Francisco archdiocese, Levada has been slow to act, harsh to victims, and committed to secrecy.

A therapist who headed his review board quit in protest, essentially saying church investigations of molestation amounted to a PR sham.

He has allowed credibly accused priests to remain in ministry even while facing pending civil molestation lawsuits.

His lawyer has negotiated deals with local district attorneys that help keep abuses cases quiet.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith is among the most important positions within the Vatican hierarchy. It is the policy-enforcing arm of the Pope. It handles the defrocking of abusive clergy.

Specifics about Levada:

-- James Jenkins, a psychologist, quit Levada's review panel, calling Levada's actions with regard to clergy sex abuse "shameful.' Jenkins stated that Levada used the panel as an "elaborate public relations scheme' and indicated that the hierarchy of the San Francisco Archdiocese under Levada is in a "state of corruption" and that Levada has created a "culture of silence" around the issue of clergy sexual abuse.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/11/12/MNGE79QGG71.DTL

-- Up to 20 priests accused of sexual abuse live in secrecy in the San Francisco Archdiocese. Bishop Levada refuses to reveal their names or locations. SNAP fears they live in neighborhoods among children. (see link)

http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/news/10399761.htm

-- Five weeks ago SNAP revealed that a priest currently named in a civil sexual abuse lawsuit against a youngster remains in ministry in San Francisco. His name is Steve Whelan and he is the Associate Pastor at St. Peter’s & Paul’s church. Levada has ignored calls to suspend him.

http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/news/iteam/032305_iteam_snap.html

-- Last year Levada supported the appointment of San Francisco Attorney Joe Rusionelli to the US Conference of Bishops National Review Board for Clergy Sex Abuse. Rusionelli said in the press that sex abuse survivors can be "deranged, angry, vengeful."

The Vatican needs transparency, not silence, corruption or secrecy.

Levada got on the 2 groups bad side and he became a favorite to beat up on kind of like whatshisname from Boston.

I truly think that some holy people sincerely believed that some of these guys were cured and it sounds like Baccellieri might not have offended again.

This is the same thing that happened in our parish and I think it was pretty much standard procedure. They were told that these people were cured and they believed it.

Originally, our priest was assigned to a retreat house but then we needed a priest and they sent him to our parish. He offended in the '70s also and there is no evidence that he ever offended again. He was here for 3 yrs and would probably still be here if the scandal hadn't hit the news. Thank God there were no problems.

Not at all.

Just as one would not use a USCCB release as Gospel, using a SNAP release is just as biased.

I would like to see a comparison between the behavior of the parties involved, the legal consequences and the public reaction to child molestation incidents in the church v the school v the home v day care v camp v homes of others (e.g. Michael Jackson’s estate) v public areas.
