Paris, Jul. 9, 2007 (CWNews.com) - A survey by the French magazine Pelerin found that 23% of respondents, including 29% of self-declared practicing Catholics, support the papal motu proprio allowing wider use of the 1962 Roman Missal.

Those most likely to support the return of the Mass of Blessed John XXIII are Catholics over the age of 65 and those who support center-right political parties.

Against the celebration of the extraordinary form of the Mass are 45% of respondents and 65% of self-declared practicing Catholics.

"Self-proclaimed practicing Catholics": 29% definitely for, 45% definitely against...

I can't help but wonder exactly how many of those "practicing Catholics" attend Mass weekly, or at least some semblance of regularly.

So the priest (if he is so inclined) will have one or two masses be Latin, and the rest in French. People can attend the one they choose

. . . or some semblance of Mass! ;-)

I'm sure I saw something on FR about the French bishops' opposition being due to the fact that France had too many traditionalists. Well, bishops' logic often escapes me, but the hostility of some bishops to this (I'm not forgetting the Americans!) bemuses me. "Diogenes" on the Catholic World News site compared to car dealers being hysterical because someone was opening an Edsel dealership down the road. OK, the protest too much -- but to what end?

Learning the Latin would actually force them to learn their own language as well...

In fairness perhaps this weak support is good, as a result of their poor Liturgical observance St. Pius X issued perhaps one of the best documents on Congregational Singing in 1903: Tra le Sollecitudini, which is all too often ignored and equally unfortunately forgotten.

Perhaps another such great document will be spurred by the French!!
