Vatican reiterates hardline on primacy of Catholic Church

VATICAN CITY (AFP) - The Vatican set itself on a collision course with other Christian faiths Tuesday, reaffirming the primacy of the Roman Catholic Church in a corrective document designed to clear up recent "erroneous" doctrine.

The document's central claim that the Catholic Church is "the one true Church of Christ", is likely to revive a debate which has dogged the Vatican's dealings with other Christian faiths for decades.

Other Christian faiths "lack elements considered essential to the Catholic Church," it said.

The 16-page text -- released by the Vatican's doctrinal watchdog the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and ratified by the pope -- "constitutes a clear reaffirmation of Catholic doctrine on the Church," according to an attached commentary.

Basically a restatement of bedrock Vatican doctrine, its release was prompted "because some contemporary theological research has been erroneous or ambiguous," the commentary said.

If I didn’t believe, and try to do, everything that the Catholic Church teaches, I wouldn’t bother going to Mass.

This is why I haven't converted to Catholicism. This doesn't mean I shouldn't attend services though. There isn't one denomination that I completely agree with, should I just sit at home and worship by myself? I don't think so.

Is that what you think we do? Get on the Popephone to talk to God?

Not really; I just find it laughable that you need to confess your sins to a priest when the rest of us have a direct line to God.

When Catholics screw up they always have a way to get out of it--buy your way out. Annulment = divorce There is as much or more hypocrisy in the Catholic church as any other.P>

“We believe” itself is an error. It is Credo, I believe.

Right, it was more decentralized. If you want an eye-opener, go to Biblegateway.com and do keyword search in the New Testament on the word "church".

What's interesting is how the word is used in the singular and plural.

Here's the search.

Lots of churches (local expressions of the Universal Church), with Christ as the head.

Hardly. Catholics can indeed ask God directly for forgiveness; in a case of immanent death, when a priest is not available, Catholics (and everyone else) should ask God directly for forgiveness. That said, the normative means for the forgiveness of sins committed after Baptism is through the Sacrament of Penance. For everyone, whether they care to believe it or not. The lack of a valid minister for the Sacrament is one of the reasons that the Protestant ecclesiastical communities are not churches in the proper sense.

Annulment = divorce

The frequency of annulments bothers some Catholics as well. That it has become what many consider to be "Catholic divorce" demonstrates that the situation has become ridiculous

That you believe that perspective . . . is . . .

awesomely . . . tragic.

Have you ever read the story of the vineyard owner who forgave his servant's massive debt, but the servant refused to forgive the trifling debt of his fellow servants? If Catholics "screw up" and "always have a way to get out of it", how is that in any way contrary to Scripture which teaches that no less than God expects man to be lenient to his fellow man in his transgressions? If you have a problem with the abundance of mercy in our faith, perhaps you expect God to be as unforgiving towards you?

Additionally, no one "buys" their way into an annulment. Can you describe the process for us? What are the steps? Who is involved? Who pays for the tribunal that has to spend time reviewing and researching the claims? Ironic, though, that Protestant balk at a stipend for annulment proceedings in the Catholic Church, but pay their pastors a king's ransom to be the intermediary to Christ that they profess no man can rightfully be. Where's the hypocrisy, again?

No, but you can get buildings and monuments to Billy Graham at Wheaton College.

Verizon?

Is there anything about YOUR religion we'd find laughable?

Just a reminder: Sunday, there was a great Catholic thread with lots of info on it. I was planning on reading all the really long, detailed posts after Mass. When I came back to it, it had been deleted...too much Catholic bashing. And how/why did they bash us so much? Because we responded to them. I suggest, as hard as it is (oh, it's soooo hard!) that we just ignore them.

Speaking of Amish. Neighbors did this in two days. No cars but well trained horses. Wish some of the non Amish were as trained.

Questions:

What do the parishioners do when their Churches close during July and August for vacation? In my 75 years, I have seen many non-Catholic denominations take summer vacation.

And Catholic bashing has been going on during the same period but many of the bashers have come and gone but the Catholic Church continues on. In all the Masses I attended in 75 years I have yet to hear a priest bash a non denominational Church...unless praying for them is bashing?
I believe our Lord said it would be so.

I get “The Budget” every week...I’m amazed at how much the Amish travel! They’re always zipping off here for a quilting, or vanning off there for a barn raising. You’d think they’d be pretty isolated but they are not! If I could just live their lifestyle with wireless and the Latin Mass!!!

They sure lack elements such as Filioque, Donatio Constantini, Symmachian manuscripts, commercial Letters of indulgence, Easter before Pasha, infallibility,to name a few.

The problem is that the lacking elements have nothing to do with the Christian faith.

I wonder what the Creed would look like (We believe...) if we all deleted portions that we didn't like? Maybe something like the Protestant churches.

Actually, you could drop in at the Paulist Center (John Kerry's home "parish") -- I understand they tailor bits of the Mass, including the Creed, to suit their inclinations.

Pope Benedict knows that the battle against radical Islam requires Christianity to be united. If we are too busy arguing over John 6, how are we going to notice the devil that has just slipped into our house?

Are you ready to accept my interpretation of John 6: in the name of unity?
