Russian Church Outside Russia Synod gives last admonition to schismatic Bishop of Odessa
New York, July 6, Interfax - The Bishops' Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, at its extraordinary session late in June in San Francisco, resolved that Bishop Agafangel of Tauria and Odessa 'be given the last admonition'.
Earlier, this ROCOR bishop was suspended until repentance for his refusal to move to the see of Buenos Aires and South America.
The Synod read a letter from Bishop Agafangel to the first hierarch of the Church Abroad, Metropolitan Laurus, 'asking his advice and instructions on what he should do', the ROCOR official website reports on Friday.
Having resolved to send a letter to the bishop, the Synod warned him about 'the dangerous and canonically slippery way he and his supporters have chosen'.
Last autumn, Bishop Agafangel strongly condemned the decision of the ROCOR Bishops' Synod to re-unite with 'the schismatic Moscow Patriarchate', as the extraordinary diocesan meeting he chaired put it. On these grounds the diocese stopped mentioning Metropolitan Laurus as head of the Church Abroad in its liturgy.
In the end of 2006, some of the clergy in Bishop Agafangel's diocese moved over to the newly formed 'Russian Orthodox Church' headed by Anthony Orlov, former Bishop of the ROCOR diocese of Western America, who proclaimed himself 'Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia, Los Angeles and All Diaspora'.
