Try reading the full context. People were showing up to the Communion feast and gorging themselves and getting wasted. The problem was that people were approaching the church meeting as a kegger. It wasn’t the idea of a communal meal (or a potluck supper).

may I ask you a honest question Who is paying for the building, its upkeep, its bills, its repairs? Who's money is it? is it not the Lord's and coming from His treasury. That money was used to build a building. For what purpose A place of entertainment? No, for the assembly of the saints - spiritual purposes. Then by what authority do I use God's money for my social entertainment?

does it make a difference, or are we permitted to rob God as we see fit?

The distinction between spiritual purposes and "secular" is artificial. A meal of fellowship is not mere "entertainment." It's breaking bread together - in most cultures (including ours, to a surprising extent still), a major sign of unity.

It's not "robbing God" to set up some tables, put some food on the table, and eat a meal together.

"You shall tithe all the yield of your seed that comes from the field year by year. ... then you shall turn it into money and bind up the money in your hand and go to the place that the LORD your God chooses and spend the money for whatever you desire -- oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink, whatever your appetite craves. And you shall eat there before the LORD your God and rejoice, you and your household."
-- Deu. 14:22-26 [ESV]
God commanded the ancient Israelites to take some of their tithe for a party to celebrate God's goodness. They were authorized to purchase beef or sheep and booze for the ancient equivalent of a barbecue - because a feast can be as much a part of worship as any church service.

(Bet you never heard that in any sermon on tithing!)
