Very true. I was in one mass service where the priest's homily consisted of dictating the new "catholic community" expansion plans, complete with a sixty foot bell tower, and an ornate garden for Mary worship. He then informed the attendees that they had plenty of money to afford this $3M extravaganza, and dictated how much each family was to pony up. At about this time, the ushers passed out personalized contribution envelopes. Oh, and he reminded everyone that their "donations" were tax deductible.
Of course that was one church and could be an anomaly... or could it? I live in Oregon now. Let's not get me started on how the bishop threw his "see" to the wolves of class action lawyers over the pedophilia craze that has over-taken the "holy" priests.
Yep, I'd say that much is asked of Catholics. And the less compassionate part of me thinks that any sap who stays deserves what they get. However, compassion generally wins out, so you have my sympathy.
