Know What to Try and Why (T. D. Jakes)

The Lighthouse Trails and Research Project, a religious watchdog organization founded in 2000 by David and Deborah Dombrowski, call eastern spiritual practices “New Age Spirituality” and list it as “a sweeping phenomenon.”

The Lighthouse Trials and Research Project goes on to further say, “Christian leaders are embracing practices and a new spirituality that borrows from Eastern mysticism and New Age philosophy… and involve many of the most popular evangelical leaders including Rick Warren, Brian McLaren, Richard Foster, Tony Campolo, and Eugene Peterson.”

In Warren's Purpose-Driven Life, he does encourages people to practice "breath prayers" by repeating words and phrases over and over in a mantra-style prayer, a practice that is similar to that found in Hindu yoga and Zen Buddhism, but I don’t view that as a recommendation to forgo the laws of the God of Abraham.

Well if TD Jakes says it's ok, THEN....!

Woman thou art loosened up!

(Man, thou art FAR too loose!)

Concerning spiritual thirst, there are simple basic rules;
1. Thou shalt not mix. What you started with, continue with. There’s no surer way to an embarrassment than chasing vodka with beer, or, heaven help you, with port.
2. The man shall not live by spirit alone, and thus thou shalt eat - before, during, and after satisfying your spiritual thirst.
3. Thou shalt observe the seasons and regard the times, or, more precisely, the timing. Sprinters do not finish marathons, and a good spiritual pilgrimage is very much like unto a marathon, and not unto a sprint.
By following these rules, your spiritual endurance would dramatically increase [with incessant practice, of course]. One advanced pilgrim was seen crawling on all four [in a truly medieval fashion] from one watering hole to another, for the spirit was strong in him.

Meditation should be a reflective, regurgitation of what you know about God, not an emptying of the mind to concentrate on the anything. Emptiness is emptiness. As for the Purpose Driven Life, I looked up EVERY Bible reference as I read the book, was appalled at the inept use of scripture. I got half way through the book in about 3 months of study and quit. I would suggest you all do the same. Whether in church, or listening to the radio, or reading a book, when someone bases a study on the Word of God, make sure they are quoting the Word of God, and not twisting it into the word of man.

4) You can’t have two Spirits in you at the same time.

You can have two Spirits in you at the same time, and even more than two, but usually it is not healthy. Some are compatible, like vodkas and cognacs, while the others are not.

Nope; you were trying to re-phrase # 1. And I merely went along, in a kind of of ping-pong playing [do not drop a ball!].

Whether in church, or listening to the radio, or reading a book, when someone bases a study on the Word of God, make sure they are quoting the Word of God, and not twisting it into the word of man.

And then go on that Word of God as your bottom line and not what you feel, or what is the latest fad in church.

However, if I am a Christian, then the fact that I do yoga to enhance my physical condition, or meditate to help me clear my mind

Why doesn't he just go for a walk and get some exercise. Why join yourself to something that is clearly connected to eastern religion?

Wasn’t a rephrase of #1. It’s a whole ‘nuther rule.

A spiritual law.

It was the same # 1: thou shalt not mix- i.e. have only one spirit in you at any given time.
A good guru in spirituality would be ted kennedy - he’s extremely spiriritual, flammable even. Or one could study under Boris Yeltsin.

A good guru in spirituality would be ted kennedy…

If you wished to achieve the same result. Surely your aspirations are a bit higher.

Ohhhhhhhh does the American Church ever pull out the hellfire and brimstone threats when a trend arises that poses a threat to their revenue collection. ;)
