Yesterday I came across the thread, Patrol confronts students over Christian literature. The word Mormon was used and I said to myself, he we go, and sure enough the thread degenerated into Mormon bashing.
Surprisingly, or maybe not too surprisingly to some, Mormon bashing is common on Free Republic. Some of the FR moderators even hate Mormons. I was banned for a month for hitting the Report Abuse button whenever I submitted a Mormon bashing comment. I was told that the reason for the banning was for spamming. ????
Mormon bashing, especially on FR confuses me. After all, Mormons, excluding Harry Reid and to a degree Mitt Romney, are generally very conservative and staunch Republican supporters. (By the way, if it weren't for Reid, Mitt would be getting torn a new one in the MSM. But even the MSM couldn't talk their way around that double standard without damaging Reid)
The state of Utah consistantly votes 3 to 1 in favor of the Republican Presidential candidate. The Mormon vote is money in the bank for conservatives and a more reliable voting block than blacks are for the Dems. And yet, some Freepers see fit to demonize Mormons for PEACEFULLY worshiping JESUS CHRIST as they see fit.
To cut to the chase here are some of the comments from yesterdays Mormon bashing:
-OK for Mormons to proselytize, but not for Christians to do the same? Hmmm..... (elcid1970)
This comment assumes that Mormons are separate from and therefore not Christians.
-They claim to be christians, but most who make that claim aren't. (ASA Vet)
-Are we sure they were Mormons anyone see their orange under ware? I do have the right cult don't I? (John 6.66=Mark of the Beast?)
-I welcome people who tell me I am going to Hell. It's a good way to start a conversation on Christianity. If you are intimidated by someone(who isn't a nut) who tells you that you are going to Hell, you might be going to Hell. (AppyPappy)
Gotta love that so called logic. The comment below was the closest to a true discussion but was purely rhetorical with malice inherent.
-Every religion needs to separate itself from other faiths, or it is dead or dying. The attack doesn't need to be obvious, but it's there. Mormon scriptures are incompatible with the Christian New Testament, and to assert that only they have the real picture is no less an attack on Christianity than direct bashing.
Bingo.. you need not go futher than OT to understand it. Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish [ought] from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
And Revelations ends the debate...
Revelation ends with these verses: For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book. (LowOiL)
The moderator pulled two other comments and finally saw fit to shut down the thread. Even so, soon after that I received this email.
-What are you offended at that I mentioned the orange under ware or that the Mormons are a cult? If that is the case lets discuss some of the doctrine that the bible clearly teaches about Christ that has been perverted by Joseph Smith and the subsequent prophets of that cult. (John 6.66=Mark of the Beast?)
The comments on this thread are mild when compared to previous threads but are no less annoying.
I don't know why, but I am still suprised and confused that supposedly open minded, tolerant, and conservative Freepers can exhibit the ignorance, intolerance, and downright cruelty displayed by most Liberals.
If you truly are interested in a discussion on religion or arent quite sure about the teachings of Mormonism then please, by all means, the next time those two young men or women missionaries knock on your door, invite them into your home, offer them a cool drink and ask away. Thats what they are there for and they can clear up any misconceptions you may have about the LDS. For your part, all you have to do is behave like a true Freeper and be inquisitive, tolerant, and polite.
One warning about young Mormon missionaries; if you are feeling generous and invite them to lunch or supper be aware that they are famous for their ability to pack away food and are the only people I know of who are asked to leave an All you can eat buffet.
Any religion that doesn't try to force me to join theirs or blow me up because of their religion is ok by me.
"If you truly are interested in a discussion on religion"
It is a big world out there, and many people, including Christians are ripe for the pickings.
There is going to come a time soon when it's going to become Crosses against Crescents, and I want as many people on the Cross side as possible...
Sorry you got your feeling hurt.. but you really need to grow some armor.. IMHO..
Why do want to discuss this in this forum? Many people may have deep theological disagreements with other faiths, but at the end of the day they can work together politically without compromising their beliefs.
He didn't ping you either it seems..
We just hate Harry Reid
If Catholics or Lutherans or whatever sent almost all of their young men & women to do two years of missionary work (at the youngster's family expense--mind you!) they'd be growing as rapidly as the Mormons. And no, I am not a Mormon.
Apparently a simple smiley face is the sole criteria as to whether one's post will be responded to with encouragement or ridicule.
Guess which one I chose.
I just loathe Harry Reid. He's a left-winged dirtbag.
That may be so but I still don't like Harry Reid
There is a big difference between deep theological disagreements and shouting down someone who worships differently from you. And I want to inform more so than discuss because this is where the bashing happens.
I have a great life and a great family, and I have the Book of Mormon to thank for that. The truth is, I don't care if Joseph Smith made it all up, because what the church teaches now is loving your family, being nice and helping people. And even though people in this town might think that's stupid, I still choose to believe in it. All I ever did was try to be your friend, Stan, but you're so high and mighty you couldn't look past my religion and just be my friend back. You've got a lot of growing up to do, buddy. Suck my b***s. (walks away)
Cartman: Damn, that kid is cool, huh?
I have armor, the gubmnt issued it to me when I got sent to the middle east. Didn't think I would need to use it on FR, but here I stand taking rounds to the chest for my religion.
I feel the same way about Catholics as I do Mormons. Neither are proper Christians, both are cults. Neither follow the Bible, both are idolaters. Neither follow the one true God, both have made things up out of their rear end to further their own political needs. Mormonism is worse, because it is an easily PROVEN falsity created by a con man. At least the archeological aspects of the Catholic Bible can be substantiated as REAL. The Mormons, on the other hand, have no proof whatsoever for their wild, foolish and false archeological claims (the South American "roots" of their faith that have been proven not to exist to be specific).
I would not vote for someone stupid enough to fall for a cult. If they are that weak minded, they'll lead this country badly because they are apt to fall for anything.
But, that is politics and leadership. On an individual basis, I "hate" neither Catholics nor Mormons as individuals. I have met many of both, claim some as friends, and have no problem with their beliefs as individuals. Their beliefs do not affect me at all.
...UNTIL one of them tries to run for office and brings their wacky ideas to government.
So, I will continue to vote against Mormons and Catholics because I do not trust the very basis for their ideology. Just as I vote against socialists, Democrats and other leftists because I do not trust THEIR judgment.Just as I'd never vote for a Muslim in a million years!
No "hate" involved. It is a political judgment.

You were the one shouting.. and it wasn't pretty.
I apologize for not pinging you but honestly I don't know how to ping.
Your talking about other people who have come to God through the grace and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. That should come above and before details. Did you you that Christendom was split in half and has never reunified over the details of celebrating Easter? We can learn from that.
