So is he consistent or not? the other story you are thinking of is Judah and Tamar, probably. And Judah did eventually admit he was wrong in not wanting to father a child through her for his no-good deceased sons.

In any case, if Onan's sin was spilling his seed, and God is 'consistent' as you say (I agree he is consistent but I think we are using different definitions) then everyone who masturbates would have to be struck down as well. [I know the Catholic church teaches that masturbation is wrong, and I agree.]

I just don't think there's enough scriptural support to say that avoiding childbearing for certain reasons is a sin. I think it's sin if it is for the wrong reasons, but those attitudes are the sinful part, not the contraception (unless you use something abortifacient).

I used the pill for a while myself in ignorance and when I read the Catholic teachings I stopped and used NFP to space out our children. I don't see what the real difference is between spacing children (which as I recall the Church thinks is acceptable) and... well, "spacing them even further apart" or delaying childbearing until you have adjusted to marriage, have a home and are settled.

I totally agree he must be a cafeteria Catholic by his words on the radio the other day. He basically said that if they refuse him communion he'll go to a different denomination (he mentioned some Baptist church - now that would be a change!). Which is not alarming to me, but it to me proves that he wasn't super serious about his Catholicism.

No. The fact that God was consistent in punishing OT figures does not mean He would punish people now in the same way. By your logic, every major city in the Western world should have been destroyed decades ago because they act too much like Sodom and Gomorrah.

"I just don't think there's enough scriptural support to say that avoiding childbearing for certain reasons is a sin."

And there's absoultely NO scriptrual support to say that abortion is a sin, but it is. Please don't even bother trying to tell me that the Bible has many verses against abortion. It doesn't. It does have verses about children, God knowing us in the womb, not taking innocent life, etc. It doesn't have a single verse about abortion. I bet you think abortion is a sin though don't you? How do you support that idea without a single scrap of scriptural support?

"I think it's sin if it is for the wrong reasons, but those attitudes are the sinful part, not the contraception (unless you use something abortifacient)."

Abortifacient? So you are against abortion even though not a single verse in the Bible actually mentions it let alone condemns it? Do you see now?

The difference is simple: one is morally acceptable, and the other is sinful. And don't be fooled. Anyone, even a priest or bishop, who tells you that it's okay to use NFP for an extended period of time (years and years, or indefinately) or for any reason other than a "just or grave" reason just as the Church teaches is a liar.
