Spent some time in Roswell, and used to belong to the shot gun club just north of town. Except for a two block strip it is like most towns. That, and the local Walmart has a UFO sticking out of it.

It's easy to laugh at this stuff but the more the Christian religion becomes linked with kooks, flakes and conspiracy nuts, the greater becomes the disrepute into which it sinks.

The real irony here, however, is that this is being pushed by those who supposedly tout the Bible as the one and only guide to spirituality. It's a sobering lession on the degree to which Scripture can be stretched, pulled and twisted to fit an agenda which is pure science fiction and utterly unscriptural.

Yeah, Catholics would never fall for anything so absurd!

Some things should not be parodied.

That's one of them.

Amateur astronomers don't get gub'mint grants.

Strangest thing ever happened to me was a family of skunks wandering through the spot I had the 'scope set up. Didn't bother me in the slightest, but even when they're not spraying they stink.

I can't think of a single thing that I've ever parodied, that some Catholic hasn't told me the same.

Catholicism indeed has its kooks. According to some, we're nothing but kooks. I think every religion has it's share. I was simply pointing out that those who promote a "Bible only" approach are among them.

Why so quick with the tu quoque shtick?

I'm quite sure that there's some sort of wisdom to be derived from that observation.

Catholic Basher!!!

I was simply pointing out that those who promote a "Bible only" approach are among them.

Sola Scriptura is not a "Bible only" approach. It is simply an approach where no man or doctrine or practice is above scripture and that scripture alone is the final arbiter of all matters of doctrine and morals

Why so quick with the tu quoque shtick?

You set yourself up for that one. You come on here thinking that because some people accept the scriptures as the final authority that a belief in a roswell/rature connection is somehow a natural consequence of that belief. Well, it isn't. This is a thread about a novel. I suspect that a lot of people who will purchase this book (and the whole Left Behind series) are Catholics who don't know that their church's official position is any different than that espoused by LaHaye.

So when you come on here and attempt to ridicule protestants, just remember that there is much among Catholics that is worthy of ridicule, not the least of which is making a shrine to a food stain on a pizza tray. The next thing you know there will be miracles attributed to bowing and praying before the Mystic Pizza pan.

And, I've read over the decades a number of reports from amateur astronomers seeing such craft.

But for me . . . that's a nonissue given my relative working around them on a daily basis.

Not precisely sure of your meaning.

Some astronomers have confidentially told some researchers that they don't dare report such things.

In terms of the reality of the craft . . . are you calling my relative a liar about working around them on a daily basis?

Uhhhhh, mind if I ask . . .

How many thousands of pages of evidence have you read with how open a mind?

How many first hand experiencers have you talked to?

I don't observe anything but bias being brought to the discussion.

I can speak only for my own (lack of) experience ... but again, I'm on of those dreaded Roamin' Cat'liks ... so apparently "under-represented" in UFO stuff.

Unless, of course, my odoriferous little friends were really from "elsewhere".

BTW, could you clarify a point? You write:

working around them on a daily basis.

What are "them"?

1) Flying saucers.
2) Flying saucer pilots.
3) Folks who claim to have seen flying saucers.
4) Folks who claim to have met flying saucer pilots.
5) Something else.

As another aside, IMO any cited authority is subject to challenge, and extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence in support.

Friend of my dads had a pet skunk. Very smart and friendly. But I was disappointed. The fur was very coarse. Not all that fun to pet.

We have a chronic problem with them. They like our grapes. Of course the big dog is intolerant of that. Electric fence wires help.
