A couple of quotes from the full message that I found to be worth noting (short of posting the entire message ;-) ):
Do not hesitate to respond generously to the Lord’s call, for Christian matrimony is truly and wholly a vocation in the Church. Likewise, dear young men and women, be ready to say “yes” if God should call you to follow the path of ministerial priesthood or the consecrated life. Your example will be one of encouragement for many of your peers who are seeking true happiness.

Above all, the Eucharist is the great school of love. When we participate regularly and with devotion in Holy Mass, when we spend a sustained time of adoration in the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, it is easier to understand the length, breadth, height and depth of his love that goes beyond all knowledge (cf Eph 3:17-18).

Vastly different from the bullying, coarse wife-beating rogue that is all too real in many women's lives.

Good point.

"Raucous round of applause. Manic hand-waving, foot-stomping"

Sounds like the fraternity house down the street...

"and raising of glass of cheap California red wine"

Would that be Franzia? 8^)

(in all seriousness, i think the Pope hits it on the nail--again...)

Ooh you are a wonder. Just like my husband of 39+ years. We both were virgins, BTW. One man - one woman.

If you have a strong stomach, and nothing better to do with your time, you might want to google the rest of the lyrics to that 'song'.

It perfectly captures the utterly amoral hedonism characteristic of a large portion of 21st Century American youth culture.

My darling husband is a very private fellow and doesn't like to "reveal all" in public, and I respect that. But let me say this: when we were engaged (this was -- let's see, our older son is 17 --- that makes it 18 years ago) we wished to protect the purity of our courtship, which was a little hard because I was so dern rambunctious. A limerick from that era:

There once was a woman who truly
Intended, both rightly and duly
To be lawfully wedded
And thereafter, bedded
But quick! Or she might get unruly.

I explicitly asked for, and relied upon, my sweetie's always-affectionate chivalry to keep us chaste all the way to "I do."

And then, we did.

Man, do I love him for that.

I realize that men have an instinct to protect women. However, I don't see how this relates to the original thread of the Pope asking engaged couples to remain chaste. You seemed to imply in your post that men are the guardians of women's chastity, which is nonsense. While men naturally desire to protect their wives or girlfriends from other men, that does not mean that they act as the protectors of chastity within their own marriages or relationships.

In the case of dating or engaged couples, it is generally the woman who sets the sexual tone of the relationship. If she is permissive, then the man will take liberties. If she values her own virtue, the man will generally go along with her. The man's desire to "protect" her just doesn't figure into this situation nor does the notion of headship.

That's a nice story. But it is hardly typical of every engaged couple. It certainly wasn't what I experienced when my husband and I were engaged. I practically needed a stick to keep him at bay. So much for the much vaunted male chivalry.
