It seems your voices have been heard and the Vatican has taken action. According to Call to Action, Bishop Thomas Gumbleton of Detroit must seek permission from local bishops anywhere he wishes to speak, by order of the papal nuncio, the Vatican's ambassador to the United States.
I suppose he has a great future in Los Angeles.
As an aside, the reader comments under the story are fascinating.
"The Catholic Church is just sooo mean!!!"
Indeed! Have to wonder how many of them were posted by members of Call to Action, especially the one on 'inclusivity'. My pastor focused on 'cafeteria catholicism' last Sunday, in a casual conversation. Imitating them, he said: "I like music so I'll sing for Jesus". "I like sex but I don't like children, so I'll practice contraception and perhaps abortion". Sadly, they believe they can dictate to God but, don't want to know the Truth.
I was not surprised by the stupid comments, but the following was just so bizarrely stupid that it jumped out at me:
I am still waiting for the Catholic church to change wine into grape juice and not serve minors in mass, alcohol. I was shocked that no wine can be wasted and morning drinking is part of the service.
I laughed out loud.
Excellent.
Awww shucks, and I was really looking forward to hearing him speak.
The endless points om the comments about intolerance of dissent might make sense if it is a point about society at large, but in a society that allows for religious freedom, such a comment about a private religious association makes no sense at all. A religious association can be as broad or as restrictive in its beliefs as it chooses, and nobody is forced to join it.
YAY! Now we are getting someplace. Now about all those other heretic bishops---
For those too young to remember:
Call to Action has been bad news right from the start:
"CTA grew out of the 1976 U.S. Bishops' Call to Action Conference in Detroit. Dan and Sheila Daley, two o CTA's co-founders and coordinators, took the conference title as a name for their grassroots networking organization. But soon, the U.S. Bishops Conference began to distance itself due to the issues CTA began to raise."
"CTA's goal appears to be to decentralize, disassemble and "re-invent" the Catholic Church so as to institute novel teachings which break with 2,000 years of Catholic teaching. These novelties would significantly change historical understanding of the Sacraments, greatly reduce the authority of Holy Scripture, revise the Priesthood, change the name of God to include female names, promote a variety of practices which are mortal sins, including lesbianism and homosexuality, abortion and euthanasia, and to integrate pagan chants and rituals into the liturgy.
And CTA is not the only culprit. CTA as an organization is merely the ideological icon for a whole generation of dissident theologians and teachers whose standard operating procedure is to take practices and terms which are acceptable to Catholics on the surface and to re-structure those practices and terms to their own ends."
Yeah, and Passover is nothing but a Jewish drinking game.
heeheehee, Good one!
Incidentally, the Church of the Beatitudes, mentioned in the article as the church where Bishop Gumbleton will speak via video or whatnot, is not a Catholic Church. I believe it is part the of the United Church of Christ (UCC) network.
Hey ... good to see you in the forum again! Welcome back!
"...those who have ears to hear, listen!!"
Talk about Signs of the Times! B-16 has slapped Martini, now Gumby, (not to mention McCarrick when he lied about (then-) Ratzinger's letter re politicos and Communion, has begun active and deep engagement with Muslim leadership, and told off the West about its ultra-liberal-atheistic-materialism.
That's only about 2 years' time.
Next, the Old Rite and the quashing of the LitWonkPoofter Rebellion.
I wish they would retire him. He is one of the worst bishops remaining in office. His offenses are egregious. He could have been convicted of heresy any time if the Vatican had chosen to move on it.
What no one seems to have noticed is that Gumbleton was NOT restricted because he is a heretic or a dissident or a troublemaker. He was restricted because he threatens to cost the Church money.
"Call to Action leaders said Archbishop Pietro Sambi, the papal nuncio, laid down the requirement to Gumbleton several months ago, reportedly as a result of testimony Gumbleton gave a year ago to the Ohio Legislature in favor of expanded time frames for abuse victims to file lawsuits."
Call to Action cannot be trusted to tell the truth, but the article seems to suggest that this was the actual reason for restricting him.
Rather disappointing. Apparently they are more worried about financial loss than loss of souls through the work of a bishop who spreads heresy wherever he goes.
Dear Cicero,
"I wish they would retire him."
He is retired.

We noticed but CTA has less than no credibility.
