Over at Greg Griffith's fine establishment, some of his underlings have been bandying about predictions about what's going to happen in Dar es Salaam. Kendall Harmon's even dropped by and left a comment or two. A while back, I speculated about what might happen. So I guess it's time for me to officially stick my neck out(for entertainment purposes only; considering my record, please don't bet based on what you read here).
I think it's fairly obvious that something is going to happen that TEC won't much like. Recall that the last meeting at Dromantine would have broken up had not TEC been suspended from the Anglican Consultative Council. And nothing has changed in the intevening two years. So I don't expect that TEC's participation in the ACC will resume any time soon and that once Kate Schori gets done explaining her church, additional sanctions will be applied.
Will these sanctions be everything that the orthodox want? Probably not. Anglican wheels grind slowly but exceeding fine. Will the Network receive official recognition? Not next month. But for all practical purposes, the fact that Dr. Williams invited Bob Duncan to the meeting in the first place means that the Network has already been recognized as an Anglican entity in the United States with whom the Communion must deal. I think the Global South bishops will insist on it.
The Global South primates are the wild cards. They may take this meeting to places that Dr. Williams, never mind TEC, cannot make themselves go. If they are willing to bolt and if the Americans are willing to follow them, then seismic change in the Anglican world could take place next week.
Which may mean that this situation resolves itself quickly. If Kate Schori is informed that Gene Robinson will not go to Lambeth and will never be considered an Anglican bishop or if she is handed conditions that she knows she can never get through a General Convention, she may decide that there's no point in continuing the charade. Even the relatively moderate sanctions that I expect to emerge from this meeting may be enough for TEC to call it a day.
We, of course, shall see.
