No he isn’t an “isolationist”, he’s a non-interventionist and there is a big difference.
First off, you have to understand the context of the term “isolationist”. It was a political tag hurled at non-interventionist right-wingers by the very liberal Wilson and FDR administrations.
To equate military non-intervention with “isolation” is in essence to say that the ONLY means of dealing with other nations is through warfare... which is ridiculous.
In other contexts, “isolationism” refers to economic protectionism (tarriffs) etc. Ron Paul is strongly opposed to protectionist tarriffs and supports free trade...true free trade, not sovereignty-diminishing agreements and unelected world beurocracies.
In this sense, George Bush is more of an “isolationist” than Ron Paul, having supported the steel tarriff.
