Kate Schori's looking forward to her trip to Tanzania next month. But she thinks that some of the stuff that's been said about her has been over the line:

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori said she has not taken personally statements by some Global South primates that they will “refuse to sit with her” during the meeting of Anglican leaders next month in Tanzania, but she expressed concern that such comments were “disrespectful” of her office.

“I wonder how they would feel if someone said things like that about them,” she said.

Kate? Read everything that's been written about Peter Akinola over the last six months or so. Oh and Dr. Williams? Kate really doesn't want to run into Bob Duncan at Dar es Salaam.

It was out of a similar concern for the office of the Presiding Bishop that her council of advice recently discouraged Archbishop Rowan Williams from inviting other bishops from The Episcopal Church to the primates’ meeting.

“My understanding is that the primates initially gathered to get to know each other as human beings,” she said. “It can’t do its work on interpersonal relations if the meeting is diluted and hampered by the presence of others.”

Particularly orthodox others. While we've got you, Kate, do you have any suggestions as to what the hotel restaurant menu ought to be during the conference? Then Kate griswolds the women's ordination question.

The Presiding Bishop is also eager to correct what she said were misperceptions about The Episcopal Church found in the response by the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Panel of Reference to an appeal by the Diocese of Fort Worth.

“The Panel of Reference still doesn’t understand The Episcopal Church,” Bishop Jefferts Schori said. “The canons seek to prevent discrimination on a number of levels. No bishop has to ordain women,” but women should have equal access to ordination and ordained parish ministry within every diocese, she said.

"'No bishop has to ordain women,' but women should have equal access to ordination and ordained parish ministry within every diocese." Go ahead. Try to square that circle. And remember Frank saying that property issues were a diocesan issue and that parishes and dioceses should be able to work things out themselves? Thanks to those imperialistic Africans, you can forget all about that.

Circumstances have changed since last year, Bishop Jefferts Schori said, when then Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold told a clergy gathering in the Diocese of Western Louisiana that church property ownership disputes were primarily internal diocesan matters and that nothing in the so-called Dennis Canon prevented a diocese and congregation from reaching an amicable purchase price for church buildings.

A handful of congregations, notably Christ Church, Overland Park, Kan., and Christ Church, Plano, Texas, reached negotiated settlements to leave The Episcopal Church and buy clear title to their church assets from the diocese. Both congregations later affiliated with bishops from overseas Anglican jurisdictions, a practice consistently opposed by national church leadership.

The rise of the Convocation of Anglicans in North America (CANA) is a further provocation to the territorial integrity of The Episcopal Church, according to Bishop Jefferts Schori, who said the church’s polity has no way of recognizing itself in communion with such jurisdictional entities. The development of rival U.S.-based Anglican dioceses under the oversight of overseas primates was one of the primary reasons she said she is willing to pursue litigation regarding property that both the Diocese of Virginia and 11 departing congregations believe they legally own.

TEC's now going to sue parishes because of "polity" and "territorial integrity." Nice to know that you've got your Christian priorities straight, Kate. And good luck in Tanzania next month. Because you're really going to need it.
