There's some parishes that are very happy to see new faces, and some which (quite un-Christianly) are more worried... other stuff (language, race, number of finger you use to make the sign of the cross [no i'm serious!]).

That's hysterical. At the Baptist church we used to attend, on the issue of "raising hands" in worship, the church observed (an unwritten rule) what I called "The Armpit Rule" -- if one felt led to raise their arms in worship, anything above armpit level was frowned on. One of the aggrevating things about churches is also it's most endearing -- they're filled with human beings.
