So upon the altar, at any rate over one of the altars in a church, you will always see this little "tabernacle," with the silk veil or curtain hanging over it and a lamp burning near it, either hanging from the roof, or standing on a small column, or fixed to the wall. This is the light that you can hardly help noticing when you come into a Catholic church, and it tells you that our Lord is not only remembered in our churches, but actually present. This is the "treasure" I mentioned in the first part of this essay. And what a treasure! Is there no sight more comforting to a Catholic than to enter a Church and see that lamp burning before or above the Tabernacle, a constant reminder of our Lord's Presence.
The Sanctuary lamp, the Tabernacle, the Crucifix and the Book of the Gospels - these are the treasures we immediately seek upon entering a Catholic Church. Christ is with us!

While I am not a fan of Catholic Answers forums (they allow a leftist cadre of posters to spew their hate-America/hate-Israel garbage while those who support America/Israel are regularly banned), there is some solid information in other areas of their website regarding the Teachings of the Church.

Another EXCELLENT POST! :-)
My wife, mother-in-law and myself (and about 35 other people on a bus) went on a pilgrimage to several shrines and churches in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania -- and BY FAR the nicest shrine we saw was that of The National Shrine of Saint John Newmann. Unfortunately, on the website (
The National Shrine of Saint John Neumann) there is NO photos of the INTERIOR of the main shrine -- which is BEAUTIFUL! If you haven't seen it you should -- it is a work of art!
