We really can't second guess him now can we? Scripture is a toenail clip of happenings? Perhaps, but it paints a broad picture with a lot of different details because of the individual writers being inspired by the Holy Spirit.
And please, no personal remarks about my intelligence as per the guidelines for posting on the Religion Forum.
Did it ever appear to you that I might pose questions that might bring out your intelligence?
This is not rocket science and imho, you are a LOT smarter than some of this stuff leaves you appearing.
Simply reasserting the proposition under debate more loudly, and then insulting the opposition, is not a very effective or convincing strategy.
Here are additional items from Scripture that address sola scriptura.
2 Thess 2:15; 2 Tim 2:2; 1 Cor 11:2; 1 Thess 2:13 ... Paul speaks of oral tradition. Acts 2:42 ... early Christians followed apostolic tradition.
2 Pet 3:16 ... Bible hard to understand, get distorted.
2 Jn 1:12; 3 Jn 1:13-14 ... more oral tradition.
2 Pet 1:20-21 ... against personal interpretation.
Acts 8:30-31 ... guidance needed to interpret scriptures.
Heb 5:12 ... need to be taught.
Was talking about the tendency for theological pontifications to show less and less sense and less and less smarts.
If you think they show "less smarts" then respond to them with evidence and logic, not assertions and insults.
**Did it ever appear to you that I might pose questions that might bring out your intelligence?**
Should have been:
Did it ever occur to you that I might pose questions that might bring out your intelligence?
Sorry about the error.
**Simply reasserting the proposition under debate more loudly, and then insulting the opposition, is not a very effective or convincing strategy.**
Thank you.
Discuss the issues, do not make it personal.

It is beginning to seem to me that such flimsy rubber Bibles and rubber dictionaries are so much the required guides on such threads as to make communications on them virtually impossible except in one direct.
Oh, that's the goal! Silly me.
My point was that the TEXT OF SCRIPTURE IS SUFFICIENT.
We do NOT need to go around pontificating about, trying to dig up and sweep up presumed, forgotten unwritten about toenail clippings of Jesus FOR ANY REASON.
Sheesh.
Like pastor sometimes says . . . God probably regrets redeeming us instead of monkeys.
In terms of folks making things personal . . . I think I've probably had more things made personal in ornery, harsh, viscious, deliberate, mean . . . . etc. ways hereon than almost Rick Warren has . . . . usually "you" and "your" and "yours" and with impugnity.
But, that's not that horrible, to me. Par for the course. Besides, that's God's to deal with.
But I am beginning to wonder if those of us who have NOT signed up to be Jr Accusers should maybe post a brief summary declaration at the beginning of such threads and then leave them totally alone to rant away in the Jr Accuser death spirals so beloved with such threads.
Dangus is talking about establishing doctrine (his exact words were, "as far as establishing doctrine"). Do you really mean to claim that the Holy Spirit's powerful work in your life is determinative for establishing doctrine in the church?
I don't think you do, but if you did, then you wouldn't believe in sola scriptura, either.
(There actually were, or are, some quasi-Protestant groups which believed that their "Spirit-filled" insights were equal to scripture, and were determinative of doctrine. The Amana colonies in Iowa were founded by one such group.)
It would bless us non Roman believers immeasureably if the Roman believers could petition Rome for a considerably thicker skin.
Barking up the wrong tree is a waste of time, with me.
So sacred tradition and the councils themselves testify to the Doctrine of Sola Scriptura found in Scripture. The rebuttal is yours, please do so with Charity and scholarship!
BTW, Dear Heart,
the comment was that the type of argument used was so . . . beneath your . . . IQ and usual level of presentation as to make you look less than was necessary. It was a charitable kindness trying to get you to see the goofiness in the argument and avoid it's stain on your person.
Is it wrong for us to expect that rules be enforced equitably?
I'm increasingly skeptical that rational dialogue is possible.
It may be the case that I shall again risk it; attempt it . . . but I wouldn't encourage holding one's breath.
I simply lack the skill to communicate meaning sufficiently clearly and understandably that a meaningful exchange can occur between us. Sorry.
The rules are persistently enforced way over the line in your favor. Proabably because of the plentiful loud noises made presumeably from the thin skins involved.
Equitably would be great progress.
No comment, except to ping your complaint to the mod's attention.
Who's right? How do you know?Bingo!
Perhaps I could put it better . . .
It's common knowledge about the forum that MANY RC brothers and sisters make such knee jerk, loud, whining and wailing sounds at the slightest PERCEIVED (OFTEN MISCONSTRUED) so called provocation
that other believers get slapped down far, far, far out of proporation and far far out of balance with the stimulus involved--ROUTINELY, CHRONICALLY.
Worse, that is often in the face of rather viscious and personal attacks on non RC's by RC's--often very unprovoked attacks, BTW.
This used to mystify a lot of us given the truly honest integrity and fairness of the RM.
But then we begain to try and consider the religion forum as a whole. And what a raucus, audacious, conflicted, tortured, fractuous etc. crowd of ornery mules and mavericks it is--and what an impossible job it is to ride herd on.
Then we began to have some compassion that in all likelihood, it was and is all the RM can manage to keep whatever semblence of peacableness that IS managed WITH showing special foam lined kid gloves, dispensations and indulgences to so many RC folks way above and beyond the rest of us--we just won't begrudge him such lopsidedness in the interest of his sanity as well as our own.
But in view of the above . . . such protestations as I'm responding to are . . . a real . . . hoot.
