Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned entire months to special devotions. The month of December is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first moment of her conception, by a singular privilege of Almighty God, and in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, our Savior and hers, was preserved from all stain of original sin. This age-old belief of the Church was defined by Pope Pius IX in 1854 as an article of revealed truth.

Mary was in need of redemption and she was indeed f redeemed by the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ. The manner of Mary's redemption, however, was unique. Instead of being freed from original sin after having contracted it, she was preserved from contracting it. This was a most fitting favor for the Mother of the Redeemer.

INVOCATION
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.

TO THE VIRGIN IMMACULATE
O Virgin Immaculate, Mother of God and my Mother, from thy sublime height turn upon me thine eyes of pity. Filled with confidence in thy goodness and knowing full well thy power, I beseech thee to extend to. me thine assistance in the journey of life, which is so full of dangers for my soul. And in order that I may never be the slave of the devil through sin, , but may ever live with my heart humble and pure, I entrust myself wholly to thee. I consecrate my heart to thee for ever, my only desire being to love thy divine Son Jesus. Mary, none of thy devout servants has ever perished; may I too be saved. Amen.

PRAYER OF PRAISE
O pure and immaculate and likewise blessed Virgin, who art the sinless Mother of thy Son, the mighty Lord of the universe, thou who art inviolate and altogether holy, the hope of the hopeless and sinful, we sing thy praises. We bless thee, as full of every grace, thou who didst bear the God-Man: we all bow low before thee; we invoke thee and implore thine aid. Rescue us, 0 holy and inviolate Virgin, from every necessity that presses upon us and from all the temptations of the devil. Be our intercessor and advocate at the hour of death and judgment; deliver us from the fire that is not extinguished and from the outer darkness; make us worthy of the glory of thy Son, O dearest and most clement Virgin Mother. This prayer, dedicated to Mary Immaculate, was composed by the Pope for the Marian Year (December 8, 1953-December 8, 1954), which was proclaimed to mark the centenary of the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.

Enraptured by the splendor of your heavenly beauty, and impelled by the anxieties of the world, we cast ourselves into your arms, 0 Immacuate Mother of Jesus and our Mother, Mary, confident of finding in your most loving heart appeasement of our ardent desires, and a safe harbor from the tempests which beset us on every side.

Though degraded by our faults and overwhelmed by infinite misery, we admire and praise the peerless richness of sublime gifts with which God has filled you, above every other mere creature, from the first moment of your conception until the day on which, after your assumption into heaven, He crowned you Queen of the Universe.

O crystal fountain of faith, bathe our minds with the eternal truths! O fragrant Lily of all holiness, captivate our hearts with your heavenly perfume! 0 Conqueress of evil and death, inspire in us a deep horror of sin, which makes the soul detestable to God and a slave of hell!

The Birth and Circumcision of John the Baptist

[57] Now the time came for Elizabeth to be delivered, and she gave birth
to a son. [58] And her neighbors and kinsfolk heard that the Lord had
shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. [59] And on the
eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they would have
named him Zechariah after his father, [60] but his mother said, "Not so;
he shall be called John." [61] And they said to her, "None of your kin-
dred is called by this name." [62] And they made signs to his father,
inquiring what he would have him called. [63] And he asked for a writing
tablet, and wrote, "His name is John." And they all marvelled. [64] And
immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he
spoke, blessing God. [65] And fear came on all their neighbors. And
all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea;
[66] and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying "What
then will this child be?" For the hand of the Lord was with him.

Commentary:

59. Circumcision was a rite established by God under the Old Covenant
to mark out those who belonged to His chosen people: He commanded
Abraham to institute circumcision as a sign of the Covenant He had
made with him and all his descendants (cf. Genesis 17:10-14), prescri-
bing that it should be done on the eighth day after birth. The rite was
performed either at home or in the synagogue, and, in addition to the
actual circumcision, the ceremony included prayers and the naming of
the child.

With the institution of Christian Baptism the commandment to circum-
cise ceased to apply. At the Council of Jerusalem (cf. Acts 15:1ff),
the Apostles definitely declared that those entering the Church had no
need to be circumcised.

St. Paul's explicit teaching on the irrelevance of circumcision in the con-
text of the New Alliance established by Christ is to be found in Galatians
5:2ff; 6:12ff; and Colossians 2:11ff.

60-63. By naming the child John, Zechariah complies with the
instructions God sent him through the angel (Luke 1:13).

64. This miraculous event fulfills the prophecy the angel Gabriel made
to Zechariah when he announced the conception and birth of the Bap-
tist (Luke 1:19-20). St. Ambrose observes: `With good reason was his
tongue loosed, because faith untied what had been tied by disbelief"
("Expositio Evangelii Sec. Lucam. in loc.").

Zechariah's is a case similar to that of St. Thomas, who was reluctant
to believe in the resurrection of our Lord, and who believed only when
Jesus gave him clear proof (cf. John 20:24-29). For these two men
God worked a miracle and won their belief; but normally He requires us
to have faith and to obey Him without His working any new miracles.
This was why He upbraided Zechariah and punished him, and why He
reproached Thomas: "Have you believed because you have seen Me?
Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe" (John 20:29).

He presents him to the world as its Lord; and whereas the Word was visible formerly to God alone, and invisible to the world which is made, God makes the Word visible in order that the world might see him and be able to be saved.
This is the mind which came forth into the world and was manifested as the Son of God. All things came into being through him, and he alone comes from the Father.

St. John of Kanty

(1390?-1473)

John was a country lad who made good in the big city and the big university of Kraków, Poland. After brilliant studies he was ordained a priest and became a professor of theology. The inevitable opposition which saints encounter led to his being ousted by rivals and sent to be a parish priest at Olkusz. An extremely humble man, he did his best, but his best was not to the liking of his parishioners. Besides, he was afraid of the responsibilities of his position. But in the end he won his people’s hearts. After some time he returned to Kraków and taught Scripture for the remainder of his life.

He was a serious man, and humble, but known to all the poor of Kraków for his kindness. His goods and his money were always at their disposal, and time and again they took advantage of him. He kept only the money and clothes absolutely needed to support himself. He slept little, and then on the floor, ate sparingly, and took no meat. He made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, hoping to be martyred by the Turks. He made four pilgrimages to Rome, carrying his luggage on his back. When he was warned to look after his health, he was quick to point out that, for all their austerity, the fathers of the desert lived remarkably long lives.

Comment:

John of Kanty is a typical saint: He was kind, humble and generous, he suffered opposition and led an austere, penitential life. Most Christians in an affluent society can understand all the ingredients except the last: Anything more than mild self-discipline seems reserved for athletes and ballet dancers. Christmas is a good time at least to reject self-indulgence.

Optional Memorial of St. John of Kanty, priest

Today the Church celebrates the optional memorial of St. John of Kanty, priest. Born in Kanty (Cracow, Poland), he taught at the university and became pastor of a parish. He was distinguished for his piety and love of neighbor.

We reach the culmination of the O Antiphons today. In previous antiphons our cry was directed to the Messiah as He manifested Himself to the Chosen People, to the Gentiles, and in nature; now He is addressed in person and asked to remain with us as Emmanuel.

Reading this final antiphon gives the feeling that a climax has indeed come. The very term Emmanuel, God with us, reveals the kindly, human heart of Jesus — He wants to be one of us, a Child of man, with all our human weakness and suffering; He wants to experience how hard it is to be man. He wants to remain with us to the end of time, He wants to dwell within us, He wants to make us share His nature.

7th O Antiphon:

Our King and law-giver, The awaited of the peoples, And their Savior,

COME
To save us,
O Lord our God.

Now we are about to receive the Savior, Emmanuel, God with us. God's only-begotten Son, born of the Father before all time, God of God, light of light, true God of true God, one being with the Father, is about to be born in time. For the salvation of men, He has come down upon earth and is conceived by the Holy Ghost in a virgin. He shall be called God with us, and yet He will be one in nature with us. He is to be like to us in all things except sin. He wills to share our poverty and to pray and suffer with us; He assumes our guilt. He is God with us in every phase of our life; He even takes our place on the cross, He remains with us in Holy Communion, in our daily Mass, and in our tabernacles. At some time in the future He will still be God with us in His beautiful heaven. All this He has done for us even though we have repeatedly turned our back on Him.

"Come and save us." The great God is with us. He has come, not to destroy the sinful world, as He once destroyed Sodom and Gomorrha, but to redeem it from its sins. This redemption is to be accomplished at the cost of great personal sacrifice to Him. As if this did not satisfy the burning ardor of His love, He wills to remain with us in our tabernacles. He incorporates us into Himself and shares His very life with us. We are engrafted in Him as a branch might be grafted to a new tree. "I am the vine, you are the branches" (John 15:5). God with usl We are united to Christ as a limb is united to a body, as a branch is united to a vine. We now belong to Christ and no longer to ourselves. We are one with Him. What a grace, what greatness, what nobility have been conferred upon us! God looking upon us no longer sees miserable specimens of mankind, but members of Christ. When He looks upon Christ, He sees Christ and us as united in one body, as a tree united to its branches. Even the smallest leaf fluttering on the farthest branch belongs to that tree and lives by the sap of that tree. Could He have redeemed us in a more perfect manner than by thus implanting in us and infusing in us His divine life? Let us reflect upon this seriously.

God with us! It was that He might be with us that He came that first Christmas at Bethlehem. He came that He might lift me up from the dust, and that I might share in His life. He will return this Christmas that He may continue and complete that work. It is for the same purpose that He comes in every Holy Mass and Communion, and in each inspiration and grace He gives us. His final coming will be for the same purpose, and will have the further aim of sharing with us His glorified life in heaven. We shall then enjoy the perfect vision of God, perfect love, and the fulfillment of all our desires for all eternity. For all eternity!

St. John of Kanty

John Cantius was born in the year 1397 in the Polish town of Kanty (whence his surname). He became a professor of theology, then parish priest; soon, however, he returned to the professor's chair at the University of Cracow. On foot he visited the holy places of Rome and Palestine. One day, after robbers had deprived him of all his effects, they asked him whether he had anything more. The saint said no, but hardly had they gone when he remembered having sewn some gold pieces inside his clothing; immediately he followed and overtook them. The robbers, astonished at the man's sense of truthfulness, refused to accept the money and returned to him the stolen luggage.

To guard himself and his household from evil gossip he wrote upon the wall of his room (after the example of St. Augustine): Conturbare cave, non est placare suave, diffamare cave, nam revocare grave, i.e. "Guard against causing trouble and slandering others, for it is difficult to right the evil done." His love of neighbor was most edifying. Often he gave away his own clothing and shoes; then, not to appear barefoot, he lowered his cassock so as to have it drag along the ground. Sensing that his death was near at hand, he distributed whatever he still had to the poor and died peacefully in the Lord at an advanced age. He is honored as one of the principal patrons of Poland.

Things to Do:

Since this day falls so close to Christmas, it would be a good time to perform acts of charity for the poor who will be suffering and alone during this holiday season. Contact your local council or St. Vincent de Paul organization in your parish to find out what families are needy. Make a food and gift basket to present to this family.
Another good work would be taking the family to visit a nursing home. This time of year is quite depressing for those who do not have family.
Take some time to learn a little about Poland and its history and heritage.
Learn about the Church in the Ukraine.
Serve some Polish food, like pierogies and kielbasa (Polish sausage). You can try to make these from scratch, or find them ready-made in your grocery store.

When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her. When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, they were going to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother said in reply, “No. He will be called John.” But they answered her, “There is no one among your relatives who has this name.” So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called. He asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name,” and all were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God. Then fear came upon all their neighbors, and all these matters were discussed throughout the hill country of Judea. All who heard these things took them to heart, saying, “What, then, will this child be?” For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.

Introductory Prayer: Lord, as I humbly kneel before you in prayer, I recognize your power and glory. Without you, I am nothing; but with you I can do all things. With this trust I implore you to help me make good use of this time of prayer, as an expression of my deep desire to love and imitate you. I am here to please and glorify you.

Petition: Lord, help me to more deeply appreciate the role of parents and families as domestic churches.

1. Amazing Grace. Elizabeth and Zechariah received the great grace of a child in their old age. And not just any child: he was John the Baptist. To ready him for his great vocation, he would need the love and guidance that are unique to parents. Great people often trace their path from the love of a mom or dad (frequently both), who might remain hidden from the world. Do I always see everyone around me as someone’s child, parent or sibling?

2. God’s Call. The child would not be named after his father, but rather would receive the name God chose. The great tension in the life of a child (and sometimes an adult) is the close identity they have with a parent ? or with a parent’s plans for their life. In truth, our identity rests in our heavenly Father. God alone gives us meaning and a vocation in life. Could there be expectations of a parent or other family member that hold me back from God’s plan for me? Or, if I am a parent, do I unjustly impose my plans on my child? Do I interfere in his or her vocation? In his or her marriage?

3. Zechariah’s “Yes”. Zechariah’s voice returns only after he acquiesces to God’s plan and agrees to the child’s name. When we finally say “yes” to God in our life, that’s when we find the deepest meaning of our lives. That’s when we can express ourselves the best. Am I keeping God waiting?

Conversation with Christ: Lord, Zechariah took a long and winding road on his path over nine months. Let me see my own life as a path, and have patience with those who are still on their path.

Resolution: Today, I’ll say “yes” to one thing that God has been asking of me.

Luke 1:57-66

The story of Zechariah contains what we might call a delayed-release blessing. Zechariah writes down John’s name, and instantly he can speak. He begins to praise God, and then gives an amazing prophecy concerning John: For you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people (Luke 1:76-77). However, the truth is, Zechariah could have spoken this word months earlier had his heart been in the right place spiritually.

It’s not that Zechariah hadn’t prayed for a son all along—he just wasn’t ready for the answer. The angel Gabriel came with good news for him, but he was afraid and asked, How shall I know that this is so? (Luke 1:18-19). Elizabeth was barren, and he was old. He didn’t really believe that God could work in those circumstances. Being struck dumb must have given Zechariah time to think and pray, so that when his son was born, he could see that, indeed, nothing is impossible for God.

It was Zechariah’s decision to accept God’s will for him that set him free. That’s so often true for us: God comes to us with his vision for our lives, and it’s not the way we imagined it, so we try to run away from it. But like the angel in Luke’s Gospel, he always tells us, Be not afraid! It’s when we let go of fear and decide to trust that we can really live as he intends. We can be blessed, as Mary was, as we believe that what the Lord promises us will come to pass (Luke 1:45).

Christmas is traditionally a time when we think of giving to others. This year, let’s think instead about how much we can give by receiving what God has already given us—and what he wants to give to us today. What has he been trying to tell us all year long, or perhaps even longer? What has the Holy Spirit been putting on our hearts that we’ve been reluctant or fearful to act on? Maybe we just need to start thanking God for what he’s already given us. Whatever it is, let’s not put it off any longer, for the Lord will take us only as far as we are willing to go!

Lord, let your will be done in my life! This Christmas, help me to see your goodness and to trust in your plan for me!

JESUS CHRIST IS COMING TO TOWN

"Who can stand when He appears?" —Malachi 3:2

Jesus is coming! He is coming in a new way into our lives and our world this Christmas. "Yes, He is coming" (Mal 3:1). His first coming was humble and generally unrecognized by most of the world.

The secular culture is working hard to ensure that Jesus' coming this Christmas will also be unrecognized. The culture has replaced Jesus' Christmas coming with Santa Claus' "holiday" coming.

This Christmas, will you be among the humble shepherds who recognized Jesus' Christmas coming, or the innkeepers whose lives were too full to make room for Jesus? (Lk 2:7) Is your life too full or too busy to make room for Jesus?

Repent of anything that keeps you away from Jesus. Let Him purify and refine you of anything that causes you to have no room for Him (Mal 3:2-3). It's nice to give presents, but it's eternally critical to give Jesus your presence. May you be fully attentive to Him at His Christmas coming, so that Jesus will not have to say on Christmas: "Why was no one there when I came?" (Is 50:2)

Prayer: Jesus, I offer You the Christmas present You desire most: my life.

Promise: "The friendship of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and His covenant, for their instruction." —Ps 25:14

Praise: "O Emmanuel, King and Lawgiver, Desire of the nations, Savior of all people, come and set us free, Lord our God."
