An interpretation that was invented less than 200 years ago is more believable? You've got to be joking.
Try this.... Revelation Study. It's a series of MP3 files from Jeff's classes. Well worth the time.

Who else would have? James, an apostle, led the church of Jerusalem until his death when Symeon succeeded him. Certainly St Paul left someone in charge of the churches he founded when leaving to preach elsewhere, and St Paul also tells of the requirements for Bishops.

That said both east and west churches have sometimes honored bishops who were appointed by governments, or with questionable ordinations. It isn't a defacto defrocking on the basis of either though defrocking them is possible.

correct as usual. But just to clarify - the apostolic succession occurs with the ordination/consecration, not with the appointment. It's like the difference between being president and president-elect.

What do you think sin is? What is the difference between sin and evil?
In basic terms, sin is rebellion towards God in thought, word, and deed. "Evil" is basically synonymous with sinful. Your point?

I was thinking actually of the situation in the current Russian church where the ruling Bishop was in fact aledgedly appointed by the Russian government, but is current still acknowledged as the Patriarch by the majority of Orthodoxy.
There are some other Russian bishops in the same boat though fewer and fewer.

If the bible says that Jesus was slain before the foundation of the world, then we are being told that our omnipotent, omniscient God created this world knowing exactly what was going to happen.
In fact, these things we are discussing are appointed to take place as clearly as if an appointment in a calendar had been set.
Judas was going to betray Jesus.
All prophecy is proof that appointments have been made.
Jesus had to be born.
It had to be in Bethlehem.
He had to be betrayed.
It had to be for 30 pieces of silver.
It had to be by a friend.
It had to be by one of his leaders.
Judas was the guy.
And if God brings about good with all of that, then who are the sheep to argue with the shepherd about which deserving sheep get slaughtered.

God spoke through the prophets and he did not say it HAD to be that way he said it WOULD be.
God being omnipotent, and omnicient could see that it would.
That does not mean that he made it so, and that no one had any choice but to do so.
