The Reformers probably knew that this wasn't required teaching, wasn't really the issue of the Reformation, and had some personal growing to do themselves in their understanding of the bible. John Wesley lived and preached more than two centuries after the start of the Reformation. Plus, he was never a Catholic, so there were no "Catholic ideas" that he had to rid himself of.
Still, your notion of "personal growing" in your "understanding of the Bible" fascinates me. This means that as you grow spiritually, you might actually come to understand the validity of Marian beliefs.
