If it were such a settled issue, I doubt Jerome, who actually lived at the time and was in good favor with the church, would have made the statement that the church did not view them as canonical. He didn't say "my opinion is that they aren't canonical." He stated that the church didn't view them as canonical. So, the choices are a)the translator of the Vulgate lied and it went unnoticed or b)Trent declared the books canonical though they were included in the vulgate by Jerome's admission as edifying reading, not good for doctrine.
