Even if the commands are for Christian life in general, we are still commanded to sing, and there is no authority in that command to use mechanical instruments of music.

... and we are commanded to sing psalms (and hymns) ... which, themselves include the use of instruments in worship.

To sing such psalms ... and yet disallow what they instruct ... would be hypocritical.

I don't believe that God has left us in such a position ... of "hearing, ... but not doing."

I fail to see the hypocrisy here. Are we to also burn incense in our worship? Are we to offer animal sacrifices? Each of these things are also mentioned in Psalms. There is no command, given to Christians, to offer mechanical instruments of music in their praise to God.
