My view is that most Protestants don't take into account the importance of the extended family in Semitic societies. Arabs sometimes marry their daughters to nephews because this allows them to give those daughters extended protection in a society where women have so little right. A widow without a son stands in need of protection, which explains the incident described in St. John's gospel where Jesus put Mary in the care of the Beloved Disciple. . It seems that Jesus was on the outs with his family, although they had reconciled with her later.
