Who knows? On the one hand, the new position is consistent with relevant New Testament texts. On the other hand, why didn't they care about those texts any time in the last 54 years?

I suspect there's much more to the story, but we'll probably never know the details.

exactly my point. if they are basing their decision to fire
her on text from the bible, why didn't they do it during the
54 yrs she had been teaching sunday school already?

if the reason really has to do with her inability to do the
job, then they just need to say that instead.

it does sound like there is alot more to this story and,
yes, i agree with you, we may never know the details.

Wasn't Mary Magdelene the first person to preach the gospel when she told the disciples that Jesus has risen from the dead? Jesus himself had great respect for the women of the Church and the first Church relied heavily on the support of women.

It takes a really small man to disregard the value a woman who's been faithfully serving 54 years has to offer a church.

This twerp of a pastor likely broke this woman's heart with his silly and brutish act.

Paul's words were meant for a Jewish context in which women were second-class citizens. They didn't speak in synagogue, or church, or anywhere.

But LaBouf probably blamed God for acting as he did, when God is anything but pleased over the neanderthalish treatment of a woman who taught Scripture for over half a century.

Once, at MSU, I took a break from the math library to go outside in the sun (I needed it).

There was a fundamentalist preacher argueing the relative worth of men and women out on the quad - he was quoting the bible, thumping it, and working himself into a frenzy.

This old jewish guy speaks up, and says, "That is a mistranslation."

He then proceded to lecture the preacher for about half an hour, on the difference between translation and transliteration, and how the preconcieved notions of the translator bleed into the work.

It was...educational.

If you want to really impress folks, preach in Aramaic.

Thank you so much for your posts. I'm really glad someone has taken the time to bring some rational discussion of the actual verses into this.

I look forward to seeing future posts of yours on other matters as I like your style of writing and explanation.

Gonna curl up with my Bible now. God Bless and good night!

While I personally don't agree with the pastor's religious beliefs on women, he should be free to fire any one he wants to based on them. If he decides he doesn't want woman doing that in his church more power to him.

I would HATE to see the courts or government telling a paster who he has to hire for what positions. I hope it doesn't become a test case to try and force the Roman Catholic church into female priests.

Who is this "Taliban Minister"? Does he think that the only times women should not be silent are when he's smacking them around?

The Lord is good!

And as He so loves us, He commands that His children would so love one another.

There is neither male nor female in Christ nor are there any denominations.

Those that are able to discern Christ's image and likeness in one another despite their earthly differences are members of His one true church.

She had taught there for 54 years.

This story is incorrect in that Mary Lambert has been teaching Sunday school only for the last 11 years. She was also previously a Diaconate Board for several years. Her combined service to the church (on the board and in Sunday school) is 54 years.

I am not downplaying her service. Just trying to correct a error. Some lazy or dishonest journalist printed this and it just seems that other media have spread it without ever checking the facts.

Yea how dare they follow Biblical principles when it comes to running a church that people are under no obligation to join...
