May I suggest that you read it in conjunction with Pascal's Pensees.. Pascal was an obedient Catholic, but he was draw to the Jansenists who were powerfully influenced by Calvinism. So I see certain echoes of Calvin's point of view that are quite different from that of the Calvinists. After all, the best part of the Protestant reformer was,I think it generally agreed, an effort to return to Augustine's Church.

Excellent suggestion. I have read the Pensees before and a rereading would be in order along with the Institutes.
