The former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey has canceled a conference on "The Future of the Anglican Communion following the 75th General Convention" that was to be held Saturday July 15 in Chevy Chase, Maryland, citing "developments in the Episcopal Church" and the ongoing delicate nature of talks between Dr. Williams and ECUSA leaders. Pittsburgh Bishop Robert Duncan was also scheduled to speak.

In a statement to the Rev. Al Zadiq, the evangelical rector of All Saints' Church in the liberal Diocese of Washington, Carey wrote, "It is with great regret that I have had to cancel my visit to the Future of Anglicanism conference in Washington this weekend. Since General Convention earlier this month thee have been a number of developments in the Episcopal Church of the USA and increasing pressures on the unity of the Anglican Communion."

"I understand from Lambeth Palace that talks between the Arch bishop of Canterbury and ECUSA leaders are ongoing and delicate. It is for these reasons, and in order to support the office and ministry of the Archbishop of Canterbury, that I have made my decisions."

"I know this will cause many of my friends in the Washington area some distress. I hope my visit to All Saints' Chevy Chase can be rescheduled. All those who are thinking about their own futures in the Episcopal Church at this time of crisis are assured of my prayers."

Dr. Carey found himself in hot water over remarks he made in May for a lecture he gave at Virginia Theological Seminary titled, "A Communion In Crisis–A reflection." He was accused of being critical of the present Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams by UK newspapers. Carey denied the accusations.

Given the fact that Carey allowed things to deteriorate on his watch while he wrung his hands, I'm glad to see that he at least is trying to stay out of the way for the moment.

As a combination of someone who should have known better, someone who was in charge when Anglicanism most needed leadership, and someone who failed miserably -- Carey would be hard to beat as a poster-child.
