What a great story! If only more parents would take their children to daily Mass. Families miss so much by not attending.
Makes my heart ache for them.
Thanks for stopping by and posting to the thread. There is so much to think about here. And besides that, it really starts the day off on a good note.
Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.

The uselessness of riches |
All peoples, listen all who live in the world, hear what I have to say: humble and great together, rich and poor alike! My mouth will speak wisdom, my inmost thoughts will bring good counsel. I will turn my ears to a mystery, I will expound a riddle on the lyre. Why should I be fearful in times of trouble, when the crimes of usurpers hem me in? They trust in their own strength and glory in their great riches. But, after all, man cannot redeem himself, he cannot ransom himself before God. The price of his souls redemption is too great, he cannot pay it the price of eternal death avoided. He will see that even the wise die; the foolish and the stupid too will perish, and their riches will pass to others. Their tombs will be homes to them for ever, their dwelling-place for all generations, even if the lands they owned are named after them. Though he be full of honour, man will not endure: he is like the beasts of burden, that die; he is like the beasts that perish. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. |
Psalm 48 (49) |
---|
Those who trust in themselves this is the road they take. This is the end of those who boast. Like sheep they go down into the underworld, and death is their shepherd. They will fall headlong into the grave: their faces will be eaten away, and the underworld will be their dwelling-place. But God will ransom my life; truly he will lift me from the grasp of the underworld. Do not fear, when a man becomes rich and the glory of his house increases. When he dies, he will not take it with him, his glory will not follow him down to the grave. Even if he calls himself blessed, says see how they praise me for my success, still he will join his fathers, cut off from light, for ever. Though he be full of honour, yet he does not understand. He is like the beasts of burden, that die; he is like the beasts that perish. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. |

The song of the redeemed | |
You are worthy, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honour and power; for you made all things, and it is by your will that they existed and were created. You are worthy, Lord, to receive the book and open its seals, for you were killed, and with your blood you have ransomed people from every tribe and language and people and nation, and made them rulers and priests for God; and they will rule over the earth. The Lamb is worthy, who was killed, to receive power and riches and wisdom, strength and honour, glory and blessing. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. |

My soul rejoices in the Lord | |
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God, my salvation. For he has shown me such favour me, his lowly handmaiden. Now all generations will call me blessed, because the mighty one has done great things for me. His name is holy, his mercy lasts for generation after generation for those who revere him. He has put forth his strength: he has scattered the proud and conceited, torn princes from their thrones; but lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things; the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, he has remembered his mercy as he promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. |
Some short prayers may follow here, to offer up the day's work to God. |
Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. |
A concluding prayer may follow here. |
May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life. |

Tuesday, July 11, 2006 Meditation Hosea 8:4-7,11-13 Hoseas prophetic ministry to the Northern Kingdom of Israel (753-722 b.c.) identified the futility of the peoples false worship. An example is Hoseas attacks on the calf of Samaria. Samaria was the capital of the Northern Kingdom, and sometimes in the Bible a reference to Samaria meant the whole nation of Israel. The calf refers to the two golden calf-idols that King Jeroboam I of Israel set up at the sanctuaries of Dan and Bethel. Jeroboam had encouraged his people to worship these idols instead of traveling to Jerusalem in the south, but Hosea identified the futility and sure destruction that would come upon those who did so. Hosea likened the worship of these false idols to sowing to the wind. It was a total waste. Nothing fruitful or beneficial could come from such false worship. Hosea warned the Israelites that sowing to the wind would only result in them reaping the whirlwind of Gods judgment (Hosea 8:7). And, sadly, his prophecies were fulfilled when the Northern Kingdom of Israel was destroyed in 722 b.c. by the Assyrians and many of the people were taken into captivity. Using familiar agricultural terms like sowing and reaping, Hosea identified a central truth of the kingdom of God: We will reap what we sow. Other parts of Scripture also identify this same truth. For example, St. Paul wrote that if we sow to please the Spirit, we will reap eternal life from the Spirit (Galatians 6:7-8). And Jesus himself told us that if we sow good seed in good soil, we will reap the benefits and receive good spiritual fruit (Matthew 13:18-23). Whatand whereare you sowing these days? What are you reaping? Do you believe that the Lord wants only good for you? The more you sow mercy in your relationships, the more you will reap love and peace. The more you sow into the spiritual life, the closer to Jesus you will become and the more confident you will be about Gods work in your life. Make the commitment to live by the Spirit. As you do, you will begin to reap the fruit of the Spirit. Holy Spirit, thank you for living in me. Help me to live more and more in your power, that I might be more like Jesus and be empowered to build his kingdom. Psalm 115:3-10; Matthew 9:32-38 |

A prayer in time of trouble |
Lord, I trust you: do not hide your face from me. Alleluia. |
Lord, listen to my prayer: in your faithfulness turn your ear to my pleading; in your justice, hear me. Do not judge your servant: nothing that lives can justify itself before you. The enemy has hounded my spirit, he has crushed my life to the ground, he has shut me in darkness, like the dead of long ago. So my spirit trembles within me, my heart turns to stone. I remind myself of the days of old, I reflect on all your works, I meditate once more on the work of your hands. I stretch out my arms to you, I stretch out my soul, like a land without water. Come quickly and hear me, O Lord, for my spirit is weakening. Do not hide your face from me, do not let me be like the dead, who go down to the underworld. Show me your mercy at daybreak, because of my trust in you. Tell me the way I should follow, for I lift up my soul towards you. Rescue me from my enemies: Lord, I flee to you for refuge. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Your good spirit will lead me to the land of justice; for your names sake, Lord, you will give me life. In your righteousness you will lead my soul away from all tribulation. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. |
Lord, I trust you: do not hide your face from me. Alleluia. |

# | Douay-Rheims | Vulgate |
32 | And when they were gone out, behold they brought him a dumb man, possessed with a devil. | egressis autem illis ecce obtulerunt ei hominem mutum daemonium habentem |
33 | And after the devil was cast out, the dumb man spoke, and the multitudes wondered, saying, Never was the like seen in Israel. | et eiecto daemone locutus est mutus et miratae sunt turbae dicentes numquam paruit sic in Israhel |
34 | But the Pharisees said, By the prince of devils he casteth out devils. | Pharisaei autem dicebant in principe daemoniorum eicit daemones |
35 | And Jesus went about all the cities and towns, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease, and every infirmity. | et circumibat Iesus civitates omnes et castella docens in synagogis eorum et praedicans evangelium regni et curans omnem languorem et omnem infirmitatem |
36 | And seeing the multitudes, he had compassion on them: because they were distressed, and lying like sheep that have no shepherd. | videns autem turbas misertus est eis quia erant vexati et iacentes sicut oves non habentes pastorem |
37 | Then he saith to his disciples, The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few. | tunc dicit discipulis suis messis quidem multa operarii autem pauci |
38 | Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send forth labourers into his harvest. | rogate ergo dominum messis ut eiciat operarios in messem suam |
